| Kennel Cough?? My Yorkie, Thor, is now 4 months old. He has had all his vaccinations up to date, and we chose for him to get the Kennel Cough. I noticed prior to his shots, and each time we brought him in to see the vet, I asked about Thor's coughing and gagging noises; all the vet told me was to keep an eye on him, and use a harness instead of a collar when walking him. The other night he was coughing/gagging so hard around bed time that liquid-foamy stuff was coming up. For months we have noticed he has a runny nose, sometimes it gets so drippy I use a kleenex and wipe his nose for him, or if he breathes out to hard it drips all over our shirt or arm or whatever when we are holding him. I've been reading about kennel cough, and some of the symptoms are coughing/gagging, and drippy nose! I wonder if Thor had kennel cough before, and the vet gave him a vaccination while he had the virus?! Anywas, I am worried, what should I do? Will this pass? Is it serious? Am I being a paranoid mommy? Should I go back to the vet? Help! Last edited by _K8_; 05-22-2009 at 11:57 AM. |

| gizmosanchez Gizmo is also 4 months and just had the Bordetella vaccine and hes suffering the same thing. His nose drips all the time and hes reverse sneezing. I took hm back to the vet and she said its a reaction like when we catch a mild case of flu from the flu shot. Who really knows all I know is its very frusturating. Hope this helps you are not alone. Also its almost been 2 wks with the same symptoms, but getting a little better. |

| Kandi and my Gizmo had the bordatella nose drops given yesterday. (Our new groomer requires it.) They are both sneezing a lot, but I think (pray) that it's just a nasal irritation from the drops that will clear up on its own. I did notice that the bordatella vaccine needs to be given in two doses. Is it the same with the nose drops? My vet didn't say anything about returning. I hope your little ones are better soon.

| I'm still trying to figure out what Kandi is doing. She's still doing the reverse sneeze/cough thing. If it's a mild reaction to her vaccine/drops, is she contagious? I'm starting to worry now. I've seen the videos, but I'm having trouble distinguishing between the two. She has no fever and it increases when she's active. She's supposed to be groomed tomorrow, but if she's still having trouble, it will be the vet instead. How are your little ones doing?

| The bordatella vaccine can cause kennel cough. It usually is a mild version but not always. A sick dog really shouldn't be vaccinated, so if your pup already had a cold before the vaccine, it probably shouldn't have been given at all. We just groom at home and avoid it.

| Update! Kandi and Gizmo are fine. The nose drops for bordatella are administered in such a way that it can (and did) irritate their sinus passages. It's all in their little noses. He listened to their lungs and there's no chest congestion at all. I feared the worst since I couldn't identify the sound they were making. The vet prescribed antihistamines.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Don't you have to be around a lot of dogs to get kennel cough? I always thought that it was something they caught while in a small area with another infected animal...like a pet store? I'm inquiring now because I obviously read the post and thought about when Ksena's breeder mentioned kennel cough and I remember thinking it was odd because how is a dog going to get kennel cough if not in a kennel???? I brushed it off thinking it didn't apply.....but I guess I'm wondering now because you were suspicious of your little guy having it and he lives with you in your home????

| kennel cough can be spread through infected dog at a dog park a kennel or by another in home pet. My gizmo recieved a mild case from the acctual nasal drops because it is a live vaccine. Ive read other pets can catch from a recently administered kennel cough vaccine for up to a few days. |

| They need an antibiotic if they have kennel cough so it doesnt turn into pneumonia
