| Bad news today at the vet Sweet Pea was supposed to get spayed today, but her blood tests came back abnormal. Electrolyletes were elevated, potassium was "off" she may have Liver Shunt??? So she will have to have an ultrasound which will cost about $750.00!!! My daughter and i cried when we picked her up. She is on a special diet and antibiotics. I remember reading something about Liver Shunts in Yorkie's but i can't find that info, can anyone point me to the site?? Thank You

| Did the do or offer a bile acids test? This always comes before ultrasound in the case of suspected liver shunt... What were her liver enzymes?

| I am so sorry to hear about your furbaby! My Yoda had beat Parvo and I thought was doing great. About 2 weeks of a major rollercoaster, then came the liver shunt diagnosis. His was to extreme to even be able to make the journey for the surgery and we had to put him down. I am very sorry, my heart goes out to you!

That wouldn't be the results to the bile acids test since there would be a pre eating number and a post eating number. Pre shouldn't exceed 10 or so and post shouldn't exceed 15-25 (depends on who you ask). Ultrasounds are only 60-80% accurate at showing shunts and the operator needs to be very experienced. Some people don't even waste their month with them. The newer protocol is the bile acids test followed by the protein c test.

| Hi. So sorry to hear this news. Hope these links help. The Univ of Tenn has conducted major research on LS in Yorkies and other breeds. Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Liver Shunt Been through this with my current rescued pup(2.5 year old). Her LS was discovered thru pre op bldwk.($80-00) Her ALT was 421, and it took her a very long time to recover from the anesthesia. My Vet reccommened doing the Bile acids test ($96.00) to get a better idea of her liver function. Her results indicated a possible shunt. He put her on AB's (kilss bacteria that produce ammonia), Lactulose(binds with the ammonia to remove it so the liver doesn't have to, changes pH of intestines keeping bacteria in check), and Denamarin(helps prevent liver cell death and supports cell regeneration and helps remove toxins).($100.00 for all 3) He did not do a change of diet at this point, because she was on a relatively low protein diet (18%) which is recommended for dogs with liver problems. Her BW was rechecked after a month, her ALT dropped to 321(normal = 100), ALP was 158, now 76, AST was 114, now 79 (normal=66), Creatinine was 0.5, now 0.3. The normal values not listed I don't have right now, bc I was too excited that she was improving! I'll pay more attention next time. The next step would be an ultrasound ($350.00) which may or may not show anything. I am curious to know about her liver, but I really don't have the $$$ to pursue this further, after a lot of thought. Mainly bc most liver problems are treated the same way and bc she's not a puppy. Surgery may NOT fix the problem. Some dogs regrow shunts, or have intrahepatic shunts (inside the liver where you can see them) so they still have a problem. Some dogs have Hepatic microvascular dysplasia (HMD or MVD), in which case they are medically managed. If your pup is not showing symptoms (most common= seizures after eating) it may make more sense to get her on the medications which I would request anyway immediately and go from there. Get a low meat protein diet (can be non-prescription). You can bump the protein with cottage cheese (a better protein for the liver) She'll need to be spayed anyway, and they can actually look for the shunt during that operation, and have the band ready for the shunt if it's there. Main point: Take time and read the website info. Get educated and carry a notepad to jot down questions as you think of them. I am known as the pest at my vet's office bc I call them so much. I just called to get copies of all her BW! But they don't mind (I hope!) I hope this helps ... and sending prayers for you, yours and the pup. Keep us updated.....
