Stinky Stinky Hey all, I'm feeding my little Sparky the Innova EVO for adults and his breath is SO bad...not to mention, the odors coming out of the other end aren't too pretty either!!! The gas this little guy lets out in the evening would be enough to make someone roll over in their grave!! I'm guessing its due to the high protein content in the Innova EVO.... Lately, he's also had some mild diarrhea - but I'm wondering if that is from stealing food from his brother's automatic feeder (my lhasapoo had a liver shunt, successfuly surgery 11/10/09 and he gets the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14). I think Sparky is jealous that his brother gets many meals automatically in his feeder and he's sneaking and sharing with Chewy -- so maybe the diarrhea is from eating some of his brother's food? Anyone ever deal with their Yorkie all of a sudden having issues with his food after eating it for a good 3-4 months with no problems at all? I'm just wondering if it is worth it to switch -- considering switching out the Innova EVO for the Royal Canin Yorkshire kibble...and maybe adding a wet food, like the Fresh Pet Select brand items.... Thoughts??? Tania, Chewy (lhasapoo) & Sparky (crazy Yorkie) |
Hi there, you might get more responses if you make your own thread. Not too many people will see your post w/in this thread.;) Yes, Evo is high in protein & their #2 will be stinky. If your pup is doing well on it, I wouldn't switch. Eating too much can give them softer stools, but diarrhea is entirely something else. Please have him checked by a vet. |
Well....diarrhea might be the wrong word....poops are hard at first, and toward the end, super soft. Sometimes, with some getting stuck on his hair around his rear end....so not really diarrhea I guess. I'm thinking he's eating too much....too much kibble and he's sneaking food from his brother....I guarantee it...I know the Innova EVO is a really good food -- so we'll just deal with the stinky gas and breath....we still love him and he still attacks my hubby with kisses nightly....so no use changing something that's so good for him, right? I've just gotta find a way to cut down on his food. |
My puppy food came out with a "B". Then when I went to the dog food analysis site it was a 2 star. I am bummed. As soon as Gracie is done nursing I am switching back to Merrick for them all. Gracie doesn't like the Merrick Puppy Plate so when she got closer to her due date I switched to the Nutro small bites puppy that we knew she would eat. I am defiantly switching back to Merrick. Her Merrick food came out with an A+ and 5 stars. |
The grade chart & dog food analysis is just a guide. Just bc it doesn't get a good grade or high stars doesn't mean it's not a good food. What's important is reading the ingredients (1st 5 ingredients are what makes the bulk of the food) & knowing what works for your pet (high/low protein or no/yes grains). For example: I feed mine Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison. It's grain free, limited ingredients for allergy sufferers. I chose this food bc Momo has a sensitive GI tract & doesn't do well on a high protein diet. Food grading chart gave it an A+ while dog food analysis gave it 4 stars. |
Very interesting post. I give Roxie Nutro Natural Choice Oatmeal, but had read around various forums that it wasn't a good choice. I had contemplated switching her to Blue Buffalo since I had heard such good things about it. Now I am a bit confused. This lists gives the Nutro an A+ rating. Should I keep her on it, or still think about switching? |
Our food is not on the list I'm currently feeding my girls Holistic Health Extension(small bites) which has organic chicken in it but I don't see it on the list...not sure if it's a fairly new food or not. They really love it though. |
switching to blue wilderness Hi, I've been giving my dogs Life's Abundance for 5 years now. It has an A+ rating also, but now all the talk is "grainless" They say grain isn't part of a dog's natural diet, but I don't think potatoes are either. I'm trying some higher protein food for mine. Evo was too high in fat, my yorkie has pancreatitis. The orijen was good, now I'm trying Blue wilderness which seems to be right in the middle as far as protein goes, and it's fairly low in fat. Anyone else feeding their dog wilderness blue? |
For anyone who uses Excel, I stuck this rating system into a worksheet, using the most recently updated grading system I could find by the original author, with a few extra internet notes, and if you're familiar with Excel it makes the math pretty quick. It's not pretty but it's functional. Of course once you get an idea what to look for in kibbles you wouldn't need it. I found unraveling the mysteries of kibble pretty tedious until I ordered it on the excel sheet, that gave me a better idea of what was what. Thought I'd mention it anyway in case anyone wants to use it, except I don't think it can be attached here very easily? |
Thanks for the very informative thread! I am now in the process of switching my kids over to Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice Small Breed and so far so good. They seem to really like it:). |
so, is Royal Canin Mini Yorkshire 28 a good premium dog food? Any yorkie family is currently feeding their Yorkie with this brand? I just bought it and seem like Chloe loves it! |
My poor puppy has had such a hard start in life. I plan to feed her Artemis dry to just leave out, but am going to feed her a raw diet otherwise. She just LOVES raw beef. I have given her grasfed organic raw ground beef which I mixed with a bit of dry, some chopped carrots and some superfood powder. This was just to tide me over until I get to the pet store next week where I can buy the Primal raw beef for her. It has all the vitamins and nutrients in it that she will need. A complete dog food. I really hope she likes it since she loves beef over all meats. Then I can finally stop searching and trying. Almost all holistic vets recommend raw diet for dogs. I have researched it and totally agree! They seem to be much healthier dogs. |
I feed the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice...I'm happy it was up on your list, and that it was a 98! Definitely happy about that..now I can be quite confident that I'm feeding my boys quality food!! Thanks for that! |
This is a really good resource :) I'm so glad to see that you have posted this here. My roommate has a westie and he's had serious skin issues throughout the years. He put him on Natural Balance L.I.T. Sweet Potato & Venison a little over two weeks ago per his new vet. It has made a WORLD of difference. He is a complete different little boy! And since then I've gotten my little Lucy and put her on Natural Balance L.I.T. Duck & Potato for puppies because I wanted to skip the possible allergies and go straight to a grain free choice. I'm still confused on whether or not she needs any grains. I've heard/read so many contradicting things. Thank you for this info! KK |
Since there is not 1 perfect food... I say buy those with little or no grains and definitely not at the top of the list if they have any. And no way any with corn! Dr. Becker says we should all be rotating food every 3 months for the reason being that there isn't 1 perfect food. Then you can buy some with no carbs and some with a little. The traditional vets all sell junk dog food in my opinion. Good luck and just do your best. ;) Quote:
