| How do you get kennel cough from another dog? Bailey and I were at Petsmart today and when we were going by another dog the owner looked at me and said that her dog has kennel cough and she doesn't want her dog getting too close to Bailey ! So now i'm freaked out that Bailey is going to get it because he was walking around on the floor in the same place the dog was. Is it an airborne virus? Does anyone know???

| Kennel Cough is airborne, and that women was very irresponsible for bringing her dog out to a public place. Please do not freak out. Has your dog had a bortatella shot this year, that is the vacine for the most common strains of kennel cough. Just watch your dog for the next few days, it is exactly what it says a cough so you will know the signs. You can always call your vet on Monday to talk to them about it, they give antibiotics for it. |

| Kennel cough is like the common cold to humans - very contagious! My sister's vet told her that letting your dog walk around Petsmart was like letting your child play on the floor of a public restroom. Since Banfield is there, sick dogs go in and out of the place all day. Next time, take Bailey in a carrier, okay? |

| I don't often get angry, and I've NEVER been angry on this website, but that stupid, idiotic, imbecile of a woman that brought her dog into a store w/kennel cough oughta be horse-whipped!! In fact, I really wouldn't whip a horse (I've had several), but I'd sure knock the stuffin' out of her!!! I'm sitting here in complete disbelief that anyone could be that ignorant!!! Having said that, I spoke w/a lady that owned a kennel, and she said it wasn't the end of the world, but it is like a human getting the flu, and needed to be treated w/anti-biotics...I pray your little baby will be o.k., so she/he doesn't have to feel bad, and I suggest you report it to the store, and ask them to put a BIG HUGe sign up, that stupid, idiotic, imbecile type people can read.... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let him not get it!!!! Thank you all for your input! I'll keep you posted on his progress and whether or not he gets it. I'm so darn mad now!!!!!!!

| Ok thanks, do you know how long it takes for the cough to surface? I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and talk to them too! I'm such a worry wort! None of my yorkies have lived past 5 years b/c they had health issues (they were small). Well they weren't mine really, I grew up with them. Bailey is MY second one. He will be 5 May 7th, so i'm started to painic. I made sure he was a little bigger because I wanted to try to get away from some of the health issues. It turns out the breeder that I got him from was a BYB. Of course I didn't know that until I came on here and learned all that I did.

| They were about 10-15ft away from each other and the dog didn't cough around him, so maybe that's a plus

| Gucci is barely getting over KC this week.. thank god! It was a horrific two weeks .. for me and him. He had to live on chicken and rice (which he loved) and he was very not himself ... . Yorkies can also develop a Collapsed Trachea from the cough and Pneumonia from the Mucous build up etc. Anyhow on to my point.. It takes 4-7 days to surface, but it can take up to 10. You will notice a Hacking noise in the beginning. Gucci woke up at 6 a.m hacking for 10 minutes like something was stuck and he was trying to clear his throat. I took him to the vet that day, she started him on Clavamox and also gave him some Hydrocodone. The hacking got worse the days that followed and he was spitting up White Mucous and Foam and couldn't rest at all without hacking.. but after about 4 days the worst part had ended and he slowly recovered. KC is HIGHLY contagious, and Gucci had the Bordatella shot but he still got it . It is Airborne and doesn't matter if your baby touched hers... he could have contracted it just from breathing in the air at PetSmart. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope he didn't. I will say a prayer for you.. It is very scary to hear them cough so much..and although they can get pneumonia and really ill from it.. they usually DON'T If you get them started on antibiotics early. Hope that helps some. |
