Trembling/Shaking?

She used to shake A LOT when we first got her but eventually she shook less and less. She used to be more nervous before. It worries me because i feel like its not healthy for them to be anxious, nervous all the time. I've heard Chihuahua's shake all the time, but I didn't know yorkies were prone to this. I've never seen it in all the dogs I met. I hope some of you consider, it may be a symptom of being cold, or low blood sugar. Being nervous all the time doesn't sound very good for them, I wonder if behavior modification would help?

Well with the tiny yorkies, yes i have seen it a lot. In Sophie's case it def. was when she was nervous. She wasn't cold, i could tell when she was cold and also not low blood sugar. Cause usually when she shook it would be when we were either going somewhere unfamiliar to her or if she was around a lot of dogs, cause she would be nervous. Her shaking def. decreased tho, over the months she was with us and that made me happy. I think she felt more at ease with us and she never shook in the house anymore

So it is your opinion it happens more with tinies? I haven't been around too many of them, but I wonder why they would be more prone to it, lack of body fat is the only thing I can come up with. Here's an example of some of the things I've read.

Dogs tremble and shake because they are scared, cold, excited or have a medical condition that is either chronic, viral or they have ingested certain types of poison. I guess it seems like if they are shaking because they are scared, that shouldn't be happening frequently, but at a specific time, such as riding in the car, or some event that scares them. If they are shaking for no reason, I guess I would be worried what had traumatized them, or whether they had some underlying medical condition.

hmm idk but Sophie came here shaking, when i went to pick her up at the airport and i saw her for the first time she was shaking, i think she just always shook. She was just a nervous dog

Perhaps it was the airplane ride, they can be quite traumatic! Was someone with her, or was she just shipped?

our male shakes a lot while sitting on the window to.. but he is a lively fellow if anyone passes he will go scatty and bark until they are gone

perhaps your dog finds it to much watching the outside world

Someone was with her, the lady i got her from was holding her. It was before her trip cause i actually went to pick her up in chicago and flew back with her. She shook in the flight too but she always shook, ever since i got her at 6 mos old. It was a natural thing for her. I always tried to make her stop tho by comforting her in my lap or arms when she was nervous and it seemed to work. After a while she rarely shook. I know that before she was with me she lived with her littermate who was the alpha female and always picked on her and i think that made her a nervous dog cause from what i was told she was the submissive one.

That's the kind of thing I meant by maybe something traumatic happened. I guess I'm not convinced "it's in their genes", and I believe if they're shaking, there is a reason. Some dogs may be more genetically predisposed to be the "nervous type", but I'm not sure Yorkies, in general, are predisposed to be nervous. I've owned many different breeds over the years, and nearly all of them would shake if we went on a car ride. The only time they went in the car, was to see the vet to get a shot, so they associated the car ride with pain. I was determined for this not to happen to Joey, and so I took him on many car rides to fun places, but after one trip to the vet, the next car ride he started shaking, it wasn't too bad, and he settled down after a while, but I think he was remembering the last vet trip.

I have noticed this with Peanut as well especially when we go for a ride in the car. I took a blanket with me today and "swaddled" him in it and he calmed down and enjoyed the ride. I think it's a comfort thing and being near me cuddled is security for him. That's what works for me.

Oh yea i guess something might have happened for them to be like that but i have to say i have seen quite a lot of tiny yorkies shake a lot. Never the bigger ones, but the tiny ones yes as well as chihuahuas. And then someone told me it's common in tinies, idk if it's genetic or not tho.

Well, it could be common, I just didn't know that.
