Trembling/Shaking? Hi guys! Before I start -- please know that I am planning to check w/our vet on this as McKenzie has her annual exam and shots coming up here -- but I just wanted to get some opinions and see if anyone else has had this experience. McKenzie is very high strung and anxious. She usually sits on the couch in the window all day with the other dogs and she doesn't generally relax - she's always on the lookout I guess you could say. I notice though that throughout a good part of the day on and off she'll be trembling or shaking. It doesn't seem to affect her whatsoever -- it's just scaring me! I know that dogs can tremble when they are nervous, but as it seems to be just a random thing, it's been making me worry because it happens all throughout the day. It is entirely possible though that she's anxious most of the day just based on her personality. Her temp is normal, her appetite is normal and all of her bathroom habits are normal as well. The house temperature is about 69 degrees -- and they hang out in a very warm sunny window all day, so I can't imagine she is cold. I thought about putting a sweater on but I don't want to overheat her if she's just nervous. If I call her name -- usually for a brief moment she'll stop shaking, or when I grab a treat bag -- the same thing happens. Almost like she breaks out of it? So I guess I am just wondering if any of you have yorkies that do this at all. I get so paranoid because I know that shaking can be associated with more serious issues, but really as far as I can see everything is still quite normal. |
My Jewels is that way also she is a very nervous dog and anything out of the ordinary can set her to shaking. Right now she is on my lap shaking because they are doing some work on our sidewalks and she can hear the trucks. Sometimes I find her shaking for no apparent reason at all. I cant give you any help with it but I can relate |
My little P does this sometimes also. I think she's cold. I really don't know what it is. I usually just put her in a blanket or something. It stops, then she falls asleep. Just every once in a while she does it. It really could be that she is just a little anxious or something. I wish they could talk sometimes. don't you? Let me know what your vet says. I bring her in May for her 1yr check up. i will ask then. |
Joey's breeders said that yorkies like it warmer than most dogs, and are really comfortable, in the high 70's (that's AZ temperatures, with no humidity, I'm guessing). I do notice Joey shakes when the temp dips below 70. Have you tried a little hoodie, for those cooler days, it really helps with Joey. Some places keep the air so cool in the summer that he needs a shirt in the summer as well. Shaking is a way for the body to warm itself, and sometimes the most obvious thing is the right thing. By the way, your body temperature can be normal, and you can still feel cold. |
Thor used to shake a lot more, but I increased his exercise a lot and it's mostly subsided. He'll shake when he's really excited, or sometimes on a car ride, but that's about it. |
I'd caulk it up to her nervous temperament. Ramsey will shake when she's nervous or afraid. |
Pablo shakes and Lola does not. |
Mandie shakes when the garbage truck goes by outside because of the noises it makes. She does the same thing at night if she hears something and then she barks...:) |
Bailey will shake sometimes in the car when we hit the highway. Not always, tho....otherwise, no shakes... |
Thank you guys for your stories and opinions! I'm guessing it must just be her jumpy nature because one minute she's shivering like crazy and the next -- she's happy go lucky and running around, lol. She seriously will sit in that window all day with her ears just straight up watching for anything suspicious, it's truly hillarious -- but I feel bad that she is so anxious. We really try to work with her and she has made improvements but sometimes I think she may just be a nervous girl. Like, when we take walks -- she LOVES it. it's the best part of her day. My hubby and I joke that she nearly puts her harness on by herself because she'll grab the step in out of our hands and jump in! And when we get to walking her ears are up, her tail is up and she's just prancing along -- but at every drain in the sidewalk, she glares at it out of the corner of her eye and pulls to the other side of the street. She's always watching for those stinking drains, lol -- she knows when they're coming up. It is so funny how all of their personalities are so different! |

I think it could be either she's nervous or cold. Missy will shake like that out of nervousness when I'm taking her to the vet. I don't know how she knows that's where we are headed, but she does. She doesn't shake when we drive anywhere else. The only other time I notice her shaking is when she needs another layer of clothing on. She's always dressed, but sometimes she needs a hoodie or jacket over her outfit even in the house. I guess when you're 3 lbs you get chilled easily? |
Luna is my shaky one, she's just under 4 lbs and I think that the smaller ones have a hard time staying warm, even when we think it's warm enough. If it is below 70 degrees, she needs a t-shirt or sweater. Just try putting something on her and see if it makes any difference. Is she tiny? |
trembling...while preggo I have a friend that has a pregnant yorkie and she does this....LOL.....but, not when she isnt pregnant... Anyone heard of that? |
It's just part of the breed. Some of them shake all the time, its their nervous temperament. Sophie was like this too. She used to shake A LOT when we first got her but eventually she shook less and less. She used to be more nervous before. It worries me because i feel like its not healthy for them to be anxious, nervous all the time. Since she was such a nervous dog someone mentioned to me maybe she passed away from a heart attack since it was so sudden. I will never know but it def. makes me anxious when they are like that too. Teddy or London really never shake, London only does it when she is expecting a treat and can't get it soon enough or when the bell rings and she's waiting to see who it is lol |
