Boy's Personality after being Neutered

Baxter is getting neutered on Apr. 24. I was just curious if his personality is supposed to change at all. I know with my male cat, he became a lot calmer and even a little more cuddly. Baxter is already cuddly enough, but I was just wondering if his overall demeanor will be change at all?

This is a good thread. I am curious to read the responses. My Dexter was fixed and he went from my little man to my little baby. I think his personality changed SOOOOOOO much so that I am afraid to have my Fletcher fixed! Even my mom was shocked to see how different he was after his neuter. I hate to scare you!!! My Dex was always very independent and exploring things and after his neuter he whines and cries all the time, he always wants to be held (not that I mind ) I hesitate to have Fletcher fixed because I do not want two REALLY NEEDY babies on my hands! One is enough!

Wow that really shouldn't have happened, makes you wonder what happened at the vet. They will change if not neutered, you need to remember that too, but it sounds like something really traumatic may have happened. I think it's also important to not baby them too much after surgery, we do modify their personality by our actions.

Jackson just got neutered, microchipped and teeth pulled today! He is really groggy right now.

I actually hope it makes him more cuddly with me. He's not really a wild dog to begin with and is usually pretty laid back.

I will let everyone know how he starts acting, if he's different, etc. How long until changes start to take affect?

When Chip got fixed he calmed down a lot. Before he was always playing and on the go. After the surgery he just slept a lot of the time and at first I figured it was just from the surgery, but it was permanent. I don't mind though

Joey really didn't change much after surgery, I think the main thing I noticed is that over time, he did not shoot out the door every time it ways opened. He just wasn't as anxious to get away from us, and explore the town. It probably takes about 1 month for the testosterone that in the system to diminish. While the testes make the bulk of testosterone, the adrenal glands make some, and the amount varies greatly between dogs. Best of luck with Jackson, hope he recovers soon. The worse is over!

I feel awful for him right now! He doesn't want anything to do with me right now -keeps going under the bed when I try to give him loving!

Actually, just this second he just moved under my feet at my computer desk!

It took Joey a couple of days to feel better. Just don't let them jump or use too many steep steps. The worse part was before the surgery, I was so nervous about the anesthesia, and so thankful everything went ok. I couldn't give him a bath for a couple of weeks, and that was hard too.

I was a nervous wreck! But thankfully, it all went OK. And yeah, I'm worried about the bath thing too... he really needs one but oh well! Are you supposed to wait 2 weeks to give him a bath after surgery?

I think his teeth are what is hurting him the most right now. He hasn't eaten anything since I've brought him home, I tried giving him just wet food, tried giving him some pieces of turkey, but he doesn't want anything. He took a little lick off of my spoon of sherbet ice cream.

He did lick his stitches a tiny bit but stopped right away. I'm just going to watch him really closely and if I notice him doing it too much I may go out and buy a baby onsie or something.

The vet suggested clear deodorant around the area of the stitches, not on the actual stitches, although onesies are so cute! I hope you can entice him to eat something soon, you don't want him to get hypoglycemia. Some people say they put their food in a grinder and add a little water.

Yay, so I got him to eat his pain pill in a little roll of white American cheese... I hope that kind of cheese is OK. He also ate a good amount of shredded turkey. I'm hoping these things are alright for him but at this point, I just wanted him to eat. I also have Nutri Cal on hand.

He may get a little diarrhea, so the sooner you can switch him back to his regular food the better, but at least he got some food!

Wow, all these replies! Baxter is actually get it done Saturday, the 25th, and I'm not that nervous anymore. Mostly anxious and excited that it will all be finally over with! The other night, he was lying on my stomach, playing with his stuffed dog when all of a sudden he started humping it! I was so surprised I told him no, and he stopped immediately, and started licking my face, like he was saying sorry! It was so cute! But I'll be sure to let everyone know how he is and how it goes!

Oh, and glad Jackson did okay!

PS The funniest thing just happened! Some guy on t.v. made a funny noise, and Baxter jumped on my lap and started barking at the t.v.! TOO FUNNY!!

I got him to eat some of his dry food I wet it a little bit to soften it up and he eat some. I put a few pieces of the turkey in the bowl with his dry kibble to get him to go over and eat it. He seems to be feeling A LOT better already! Still just very tired and groggy!
