				 | Smelly "Oso" Hi all, I dont know where this question should go but here it goes. My lil Oso produces this smell every once in a while. It is hard to describe.. but lets just say.. it smells horrible . He was just neutered on Friday, and when I picked him up I could smell it but thought it was due to the surgery. But today as he was sitting on my lap.. he did it again. It is coming from the booty.. that bad part, is I can not give him a bath now. Not until he heals.. has any one else experienced this smell. Please advise. I will ask his Vet on Friday when he goes back. |

				 | Hi I read you post on another site. I agree it sounds like anal glands. I suggest calling your vet just to be sure. Since he recently had surgery the Vet should be the one to express them then when he is all healed up it's something you can easily do when giving him a bath, it's no biggie really if that is what it is. All dogs have glands on either side of the anus and it aids in elemination and they normally don't cause any problem. But be sure to have the vet check it out maybe when he goes back foe a recheck or for his post op visit. Good Luck & God Bless.... Sharon |

| YT 500 Club Member | I'm going to jump on this thread since I was jsut about to post the same thing about Meg. She.... smells! She had some fatty foods on Sunday and then had an upset tummy and diarrhea (well, not total liquid, but like melting ice cream - gross!) that night. Since then she has been stinky!!! She ended up having some poop stuck on her bum from the diarrhea so I gave her a bath. She is totally clean, but the smell is still there. I was thinking that perhaps it could be anal glands, but it could also just be farts. The thing is.... the smell is almost coming from her mouth. She has always had great breath but now it's really getting smelly. Do you think it's related to the poop issue? I have never seen her eat her poop so I do not think that it the problem. ANyone else had this problem? She refuses to let me brush her teeth. She moves her head around so much and I can't get a good grip on her for fear that I will hurt her little neck.

				 | smelly dogs Excuse me, but WHY are you giving a YORKIE fatty foods??????????? That will really mess up their systems. If you are not aware, Yorkies are prone to Pancreatitis that is and iflamation of the Pancreas, (can't live with out that organ!) Her system is probably SO messed up from whatever you gave her, she may be in the beginning of a Pancreatis attach. She can DIE from eating FATTY FOODS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! I am not surprised she has/had diarrhea and has a bad smell coming from her. I strongly suggest that she see the vet ASAP so he can run the blood work to see what condition her Pancrea and Liver are in, probably not very good. Don't mean to offend, but I almost lost a Yorkie to this and I know it was from giving him table food we almost LOVED him to death by giving him our food.... PLEASE for the dogs health only give a high quality DOG FOOD... it is easier for them to digest and has all the nutrients a healthy pup needs. I hopw you will take her to the vet and let us know what he had to say. GOOD LUCK, you might need it for your baby........ Sharon |

I do give Meg a very, very high-quality food (The Honest Kitchen) and I do not normally give her any fatty foods. She did get some ham - a small amount, I should add - on Easter. At that point I didn't know that it could bring on a pancreatitis attack, and when I read about that the next day on YT, I obviously decided that she will never get food like that again! I know you are speaking out of concern and I appreciate you posting, but this was a one-time thing and I do normally feed her a very high quality food. Your post seems a bit harsh, but I guess that is okay since you are probably assuming that she eats like this regularly. Meg had (not has) diarrhea once after she ate the food, and she's been eating normally enough since with no throwing up, no yellow poop, no distention in the stomach, etc. I don't think that eating such a small portion of ham once - we're literally talking about a few small bite sized pieces - is enough to throw her into the serious stages of pancreatitis, but of course I will keep an eye on her. She has a vet appt on Friday to get her Rabies shot, so I might ask them to run blood work then just to see where she is at. What sort of blood work should I ask them to do? If I am not very specific and direct with my vet, she won't do the tests I need. Oh, and before you go off on yelling at me to get a new vet, I'll let you know that there is ONE English-speaking vet in my area of Korea, so I have to work with what I have.

				 | Meg, I am sorry that I came off harsh. If you knew what we went thu with our baby you would understand more. I do apologise. I think it would be covered with a complete blood panel (like we would get for our health screening) and a CBC.and white count, this would show if she has anything abnormal going on in most of her internal systems. If she is acting ok by Fri it may not be necessary but I sould be sure to have her atleast listen to her tummy and palpate it for and enlargement and also look at her teeth. She could possible still have a baby tooth that needs to be removed. They can get decayed and that smells really bad! too. Good Luck with you baby... I will say a prayer for her... Sharon |

| YT 500 Club Member | Sharon, that's alright. It's so hard to tell sometimes. I've read so many mean posts by people who surely mean well (I'm not talking about yours). Meg is acting totally fine tonight, so I think she's okay. I will def talk to the vet about it on Friday though. As for baby teeth, Meg just lost her front top/bottom teeth but hasn't lost any of teh side teeth, at least not that I've noticed. Also, I normally mix her Honest Kitchen with Newman's Own, but this week I've given her mostly Newman's Own since she was eating it SO well. I think the change in food may have given her bad breath. Could that be it? I have her back on a mix of Honest Kitchen and Newman's Own now, so we'll see if teh breath issue goes away. Also, I gave her a good smelling when I got back from work today. The smell is definitely from her mouth, not the other end, so I don't think it's an anal gland issue. To the OP, sorry to hijack this thread!

If the diarrhea has stopped, the vet isn't going to do anything. You can run the Spec cPL if you want to check for pancreatitis, but since she is better, it may very well be a waste of money. Unfortunately, a few bite size pieces of certain foods (fatty ham included) can trigger pancreatitis. I'm sure most of us have done something similar though. I know I have. Whats done is done. Don't worry about it.

| Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm curious about the risk of pancreatitis. Don't many people here give their dogs Kongs with peanut butter? Peanut butter is very high fat. When people feed raw, do they leave skin on the birds? I would think that all the food gets mixed together in the stomach. A dog treat may be 13% fat, but how is that different from giving a little bit of ham with a good amount of rice? Also, what constitutes a "fatty" food? 30% fat? 70%? What about quantity? A tiny bit of olive oil is pure fat. Is that worse than a bunch of dog treats that have the same total amount of fat as the olive oil?
