| ![]() you already sound like a great mommy. you are worried about this baby you do not even have in your home yet and already thinking of what is best for her. however, no one here is going to tell you it is "okay" to bring her home at 5 weeks. i am sorry to be the messenger ![]() ![]() ![]() i am sorry you are being put in such a hard position. it seems like a no-win situation and the breeder makes me MAD! ![]()

How much does this little girl weigh? I did get my first one at one day shy of 7 weeks, she did fine, but, she was bigger at about 2 lbs and was eating really well. They do a lot of growing, etc though in 2 weeks. Last edited by phfgkl; 04-07-2009 at 06:24 PM.

| ![]() I am going to give this woman the benefit of the doubt and assume this is an emergency and she is not aware that she will be breaking the law if she sells the puppies at five weeks old. If you read my earlier post, Virginia law also requires that she provide you with a vet certificate when you take possession of the puppy. No vet is going to break the law and risk his license by signing a certificate saying the puppy is healthy and fit to go to its new home at five weeks old. If you go ahead with this, it will be an illegal transaction under Virginia law and you will have no recourse if the puppy gets sick or dies no matter what your contract or agreement was. I wouldn't get a puppy from this breeder, no how, no where, let alone pay $1500 for it! |

| ![]() how about asking her if you can bring the momma and the babies to your house so you can watch them while she is gone .then the baby will have her momma to take care of them....if she is willing to leave them maybe she'll do that much ...just have her sign something that says you are not responsible if any of the babies don't make it.....I know you love ellie already..just a thought..

| ![]() I do find that interesting..it sounds to me that she just cares about the money but at this point if there is a way to save this litter and still report her and have her shut down would be the win win here...

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() I know that most of you will not agree with me bringing her home and that by doing this I am endangering the lives of many others, but at this point I feel that the best course of action for ME would be to bring her home and give her a fighting chance. I do have every intention of reporting this breeder but I feel that I have to at least try to save Ellie! If she dies I will be so heartbroken, but I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't at least try! I would always wonder where she was and if she were ok! |

You need to make her aware of the law before you go any further with planning or preparation.

Read the thread about poor little Macy who is struggling to survive parvo. She had her full round of three shots, but they were given too early so she wasn't protected. In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() I"m sorry but i agree with ladymom here. To the OP i know you had your heart set on getting this little puppy, but we beg you to reconsider. others here have already told you what can happen. we've just seen this happen so often here. parvo, distemper, worms, anemia, hypogylcemia, etc... these babies are just so small that they need their mothers for at least 8 weeks, preferably 12 weeks. that being said. how much does the puppy weigh that you are getting? is it a bigger puppy or a tiny puppy? if the puppy weighs a few pounds already you have a better chance of keeping it alive. however if your puppy weighs the same as mine did at that age you have a very slim chance. at 5 weeks my puppy weighed maybe 1 pound soaking wet. when was the last time you've seen the puppy? is it a fat little puppy? does it look like a good eater? i just remember what mine looked like at that age and can't even imagine taking care of her without the mother. she fit in the palm of my hand.

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() ~ELLIE UPDATE~ I have spoken with the vet this morning and I have an appointment scheduled for 9:30 Friday morning...I will be picking her up Thursday evening. After speaking to the vet, I am feeling a little more at ease. He said that though this isn't very common and not the ideal situation, since she is weaned and eating on her own he thinks that she will be just fine. He also said that this was going to be very stressful for her but for me to keep a very close eye on her and that it sounded like I had done everything I could to prepare...Heating pad, NutriCal, Benebac gel, IV fluids, digital thermometer, etc. The only thing for me to do at this point is to purchase a digital scale so that I can keep an eye on her weight. Thanks for all of the advice and I will keep you all posted! |

| ![]() If the 'breeder' is hell bent on getting rid of these puppies...she will. Yep, it's wrong wrong wrong BUT Ellie's Mom is going to report her...that's the best she can do. As for Ellie, what better place for her to be than with someone on this board? There are so many bright informed people here who will help in a heart beat...I think BYB's suck BUT she, at least, has a fighting chance with the YT team behind her! ![]() |
