| ♥ Missy may be going into heat, and I'm not sure what to expect ♥ She turned 7 months old on Friday (yay Missy) and she *finally* reached 3 lbs (woohoo). I've noticed that the last couple of days she's not really eating much, and she's licking down below which she's never done before. Last night when we went shopping at Sapphire's Closet, Gillian's little Georgie seemed particularly interested in her. Don't worry I kept them apart. I've never NOT spayed a dog before her first heat, so I really don't know what to expect. The only reason that I've delayed Missy's spay is because she has been put under anaesthetic FOUR times in the last 8 weeks, twice for xrays and twice for surgery. She is still recovering from her screw removal last week. So the timing has just been bad, and unfortunately she may have to go through one heat before I get to have her spayed. SO, my questions (after all that babbling) is what should I expect? How long and how much do they bleed? How long does the heat last? Will she be uncomfortable? If so, what can I do for her? And how often do they go into heat? Thanks everyone!

| The thing to be careful about is when she stops bleeding...most people who haven't dealt with it before think the heat is over when the bleeding stops and that's not true. In fact, she is ready to breed at that time! After the bleeding stops (which is usually not very much, but just enough to make rusty-looking stains on your furniture, bedding, carpets, clothing, etc.) the discharge will change to kind of straw-coloured and clear. This lasts from 7 to 10 days and is when she is most likely to become pregnant if bred. Most dogs will come into season twice a year if they are not bred. The best thing, if the dog is not spayed, is to keep britches on her and watch the discharge on the disposable pads. When there is no discharge of any colour for at least 3 days, the "danger" is over. You better get to that sewing machine quick!!

| You should not have her spayed until after her heat cycle which could last 21 days. She will get swollen and start licking alot. Good luck to you. My friends Yorkie went into heat at 6months... |

| Punkin is in heat now, she's the first dog I've ever had that was not spayed or neutered so, in spite of the fact that she's four years old, it's a new experience for me. She keeps herself very clean, we're on week two and the bleeding has become a little heavier. Enough so that I am keeping a diaper on her when she's not in her crate. Note, she does NOT like it at all! I need to make the decision soon whether or not I want to breed her one more time or simply have her spayed. Part of me says she's had enough litters of puppies (she was a puppy mill breeder), but she's so lonely and keeps looking for puppies. I feel torn about it. I hope your lil Missy's time goes quickly and easily. |

| Well, if she's cleaning herself alot that sure is a sign. At least that's been my experience with Zoe. I hardly see any blood and really have to look for it but her privates swell up ALOT - it was very noticeable! And yes, it's after they have stopped bleeding that you really have to worry! Good luck with your baby! I know it can be scary, especially with the tiny ones! |

| Thanks for the feedback. I am not concerned AT ALL about her becoming pregnant. She is only around my pug dog (spayed female), unless we go shopping at Sapphire's Closet. Otherwise she has zero contact with other dogs. Her "area" is not swollen at all. So I'm unsure if she is coming into heat or not. It's just a guess.

| You're funnnnnny! They would make the cutest babies ever! It's unfortunate that she's too small to breed. Plus, I wouldn't know what the heck I was doing anyways. I'll just leave all of that to the pro's

| Tila had one heat, I didn't get to the vet before she went into it. Her appointment is on the 17th for her spay, microchip and to have a couple teeth pulled. When she went into heat she was licking herself a lot. and she was swollen, she bled a little bit, but not too much. You don't really see it because they keep themselves so clean. |
