The thing to be careful about is when she stops bleeding...most people who haven't dealt with it before think the heat is over when the bleeding stops and that's not true. In fact, she is ready to breed at that time!
After the bleeding stops (which is usually not very much, but just enough to make rusty-looking stains on your furniture, bedding, carpets, clothing, etc.) the discharge will change to kind of straw-coloured and clear. This lasts from 7 to 10 days and is when she is most likely to become pregnant if bred.
Most dogs will come into season twice a year if they are not bred.
The best thing, if the dog is not spayed, is to keep britches on her and watch the discharge on the disposable pads. When there is no discharge of any colour for at least 3 days, the "danger" is over.
