| Millies teeth are awful - what can I do? She is 10mths old and has so much plaque build up on her teeth around the gums. I have taken her to the Vet and I am getting her spayed next month, and getting her teeth descaled, and baby teeth out. But I am afraid they are going to get as bad again. She eats dry food, the vet has given me stuff to put in her water to stop the build up, and I use Logic dental gel on her teeth. The only thing is that she doesn’t like getting them brushed, or should I say hates! I just cant understand why they would be so bad at this age? Her breath is so smelly too.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Hmm, 10 months does seem young to have bad problems but I'm no expert. Personally, I swear by brushing. It's best if you get them used to you putting your fingers in their mouth when they're puppies, but you should be able to condition her to tolerate it now. Start slow, without a brush or toothpaste. When your pup is relaxed, slip your finger into her mouth and try to rub her teeth with your finger. If she tolerates it, say GOOD GIRL and give her a treat. Do that for a week, a couple times a day if possible. Then try to find a flavored toothpaste. I use Petrodex chicken flavor. My dogs like the taste. Put a little on your finger and let her lick it. Then rub some on her teeth, just like you were massaging before. Do that until she seems comfortable with it. If you give it your best and that doesn't work, you can try something like PetzLife Oral Care spray or gel. I use that on my Lab with good results. But I'm told you should do it every day to really make a difference whether you're brushing or using a spray or gel. Good luck.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You could also try ProDen Plaque Off.

| I'm in the UK so cant get the products you mention. The Logic gel has good reviews in the UK, and says it can be rubbed on the teeth, without brushing.

| i swear by brushing..I know they will hate it in the first but they'll get use to it. Brushing is the best. My girls used to hate it but now they don't fight it cuz they know it's part of their daily routine. I brush their teeth everyday. Doing it everyday is the key. YOu'll see the results of brushing in couple of weeks.

| Yes brushing every day is essential especially if you have a dog who is prone to plaque build up |

| Hi - Did you get any success with what you tried? My yorkie had terrible teeth, she wouldn't tolerate brushing and I tried heaps of things. She had a dental once a year, but when she got older the vet preferred to leave them and eventually when I insisted they look, she had a lot removed. I think with my time again, I will definitely work even harder on brushing. But my mother-in-law swears by those dental hide chews. I'm also researching the food that I give this time, Tink could only tolerate one kind of wet food in her latter years. So I want to find the best I can for teeth and health next time. I'm in the UK, too. So anything you find over here would be great to hear about. |

The vet gave me aquadent to add to her water, and I also found recommendations for logic gel, which works when just rubbed over her teeth. Not as good as brushing, but the best I can do at the minute.

| At the times my babies were spayed and neutered, their teeth were cleaned. They get checked every time they go to the vet. They both had their teeth cleaned again in Feb. I got a call from the vet while Rebel was still "out". He told me that he had to pull 9 of Reb's permanent teeth. It's a long story, but he has a genetic defect in his teeth that means he has very soft, or no enamel at all on his teeth. My baby is only 2 years old! I have to be very careful with his teeth now. He HATES having them brushed, but I try to brush them regularly. Please keep a vigilant eye on the condition of your baby's teeth. I feel so sorry for Rebel now and worry constantly about him losing more.
