| Absolutely. Ellie ended up with severe periodontal disease and osteomyelitis (bone loss) because her teeth were not properly maintained. With good homecare and oral surgery, they are much improved.

| I started after her surgery (after her adult teeth started falling out ) when she was 5...so about 2 years ago. We try to brush daily, floss weekly and do OraVet weekly.

| I havent started brushing Ryles teeth either. He will be a year old in a week and I feel like a bad mom, and like I am the only one not doing so. I also wonder if I have waited to long to get started and that it will be really hard to get him used to it. I just never started doing it. Maybe we will give it a try tomorrow. |

The normal recommendation is to just use your finger at first and let them get used to that and gradually start to brush over time. I never was quite so nice to Ellie. When the vet said start brushing, I started and Ellie got over it.

| Meet another bad mom. Lexilyn is 1 yr old and I haven't started either. Her vet said the other day she has some tarter so I know I need to do it. I don't know how to start so I keep putting it off.

| We brush Lucas' teeth every couple days. I was worried because of Yorkie's tendency to have poor teeth, so I didn't want that to happen. How we started was just putting the tooth gel (it's peanut butter flavored so maybe that helped? ) on the brush and putting it down and letting him lick/chew/get used to it. Right away he was chewing right on the bristles, as if he were brushing his teeth by himself! Then gradually we would wait until he opened his mouth to chew the toothbrush and start moving it around in his mouth for him. As long as you do it gradually, it will be easier. Good Luck

| Oh also, we use the little baby toothbrushes from the drug store because at the pet store they didn't have any small enough for his little Yokrie mouth

| Hi, We got Tiki when she was 10 weeks old. We had small toothbryushes that the grandkids had used so we just let her have it to chew on for several weeks. Then we would just put it in her mouth and let her chew on it while we held her and it. We actually started brushing her teeth when she was about 4 months old. We didn't care if it was baby teeth or adult teeth because it was treating the gums too. She is 3 1/2 now and has had no decay or anything. The doctor said that at her next checkup in March they will check really well and maybe decide to do some cleaning. She had a bit of plaque on her outside upper teeth so we had to up the ante there so to speak and that gets more attention. Plus, we bought some spray at Petco that the groomers use when they brush the dogs teeth. We don't like to spray around her eyes in case she moves so my husband just puts some on his finger and rubs it over those teeth. He does it on both sides inside and out. Hopefully all of this will prevent those peridontal problems nd she will keep having good strong teeth. Oh, we bought those little rope twisted chew toys too. Some of them actually have dental floss on the, She LOVES those toys and will chew and chew and does it in front and on both sides. This has to help too! Myrna - aka - Tiki's Mom |

| Layla gets her teeth brushed daily- i started when she was about 6 months old- i use an infant toothbrush and doggy toothpaste- she hates every minute of it but tolerates it- I woudl start slowly- let her lick the toothbrush and get used to it. When i brush Layla's teeth I lay her on her back on my lap and pull her "cheek" out and brush as long as she will let me with dogs you do not have to worry about the in- side of their teeth- just the outside- no idea why but that's what i was told |
