| All I hear is "Don't give pets people food!" But there are pages and pages of recipes and discussion about cooking for your Yorkies here. Jorja is being fed Royal Canine for puppies as this is what was sent by her previous owner. I cook from scratch for my family so it only makes sense I would not feed Jorja commercial processed dog food. I just didn't realize it was a good thing. Is it hard on their digestive systems to transition from dry packaged dog food to homemade dog food? How does it affect the dog's stools? I don't want runny messes to clean up, kwim? |

| I homecook for mine every now and then. If your going to do it all the time it needs to be balanced and you need to suppliment. Mine have never had any stool problems after eating it but I dont think they have sensitive stomachs

| It is okay to feed homecooked 100% of the time as long as supplements are given and certain foods are avoided. Some dogs who eat canned food do have soft stools, so I guess the same would go for homecooked but many of them do just fine with it. You shouldn't have a problem unless they are sensitive to one or more of the ingredients. When homecooking for a pup, it is pretty important to talk to a canine nutritionist.

| In order to do homecooking for dogs, you have to add in supplements and all that stuff to make sure it's balanced for them. That stuff is beyond me, so I feed dog food lol. You also have to be careful with some ingredients too because dogs can't have everything that people can... just to name a few - garlic, onions, chocolate, grapes, raisins, etc. In order to avoid runny poop, I would mix the home cooked with the kibble for awhile starting with mainly kibble and a little of the home cooked food, then a little less kibble, and a little more home cooked, so on and so forth until you fade completely off the kibble.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think you are confusing "table scrapes" with home cooked. Years ago, this is how we fed our dogs, however, years ago; we were eating healthier too. Now, table scrapes can mean an acute attack of pancreatitis after just one fatty meal. So if you are going to home cook, do lots of research, and plan on using supplementation (a vitamin and mineral supplement). Many people who home cook recommend seeing a canine nutritionist to find the right balance of protein, carbs, and fat for your dog. Remember a balanced human diet is not a balanced canine diet.
