Coccidiosis - How to prevent? Trixie got treatment for Coccidiosis (she wasn't sick at all, but the vet found it with her first puppy check). She most likely got it by eating rabbit poop in our yard. There are rabbits everywhere in our neighborhood... how do I prevent Trixie from eating it and getting the parasite again????

pup She probably got it from her mom. Since she is a young puppy that is the way most get it. They can shed the larva in a stool, but be symtom free..many get a flair up when they go to their new home and are stressed with new surroundings etc. It can be cleared up in breeding stock with meds..then the area is kept clean and that is usually the end of it. I had a problem with two adults I bought..their pups came up with it in both litters they had...so I had all my dogs treated and it never came back.

adults Yes, that is true about adults. They can show coccidia in the stool checks, but show no symtoms their entire life..unless they have a compromised immune system...but they can pass it to other dogs in the kennel, young ones and their litters...these are the ones who show symtoms and become ill. Treat the adults and rid it from their intestials and you will get litters free of it also. You also want to prevent them from being around chickens, birds and other fowls stool. Sandy Lemire wrote a very great chapter in her book about this..she raised exotic chickens and could not get rid of coccidia in her Yorkies for a period of time. Best wishes

I live in the country (mountains) and my girls eat rabbit droppings all of the time. They are all over...there is no way that I can stop her. On her walks, she is always finding them and I try to pull her away, but she eats them faster than anything. I hope she doesn't have this coci whatever in her system? She doesn't show any signs of anything either???!!!

The weird thing is that she did not have any symptoms. Her stools were solid and she was feeling fine. The vet found it in her first puppy check... She loved the albon though... she was going crazy for it... Hopefully she won't get it again!!!

My Mojo was diagnosed with this at his puppy visit. The vet said it takes 2 weeks to incubate, so he had it from the breeder. He just finished his last dose of Albon. I'm worried, because we live on a farm & chickens run loose in our yard. Of course Mojo loves their dropping...yuk!! Where do I get this book by Sandy Lemire?

If he already had it he will probably be immune to it for the rest of his life.
