| Dental Vaccination during Neuter? The last time we visited our vet, the topic of neutering Nikko came up. Fine by me, I'm all about it. Neuter away! HOWEVER, my question is about a vaccination she told me about that she wants to give him that's only a year and a half old. She said "these little guys" tend to have problems with their teeth, and the vaccination is against some of the bacteria that leads to some of the more major dental problems. I don't know what the vaccination is called, and I've never heard of such a thing, though I do know yorkies tend to have dental issues. Frankly, I'm scared of the vaccine, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to tell her to not do it. I'm wondering if any of you have ever heard of this, or have actually had your little one vaccinated with it. And I'm also looking for some reassurance that if I give Nikko plenty of healthy things to chew on, and avoid feeding him anything that could unnecessarily gunk up his teeth (homecooking, canned, etc), that his teeth will be just fine without the vaccination. Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | When I looked into this quite a while ago, I recall *not* being impressed with the efficacy of this vaccine. Also, since the now-worse dental issues in dogs is so correlated with OVERvaccination, I just don't buy that yet another vaccine will fix this issue. Ask her for peer-reviewed published data supporting the efficacy of this vaccine, I'd be interested in seeing it. If there is none or not enough, then I absolutely would not get this vaccine.

| I am with Wylie's Mom, there is already waaaaay too much over vaccination going on with dogs. I don't believe we need another one. Especially since you can prevent it with diet and keeping the teeth clean. You will probably always get gunk build up to some extent. I have a hollistic groomer who used to be a vet tech and she uses a scaler and cleans them occasionally (and showed me how to do it) and Wookie hasn't even ever had to go be put under and have a vet clean his teeth. I 'brush' his teeth twice a week with those dental pads that look like the old Stridex pads. (I couldn't get a toothbrush into his little mouth enough to get the back teeth clean) So if I were you, I wouldn't do it. JMO

| This vaccine is to new to know all the potential adverse reactions it may cause and the long term problems that may occur are still unknown. It says to use it in CONJUNCTION with at home teeth care and regular vet cleanings. So you still have to brush yourself and do the vet cleanings. I have looked around and found that the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine posts about it: Canine Porphyromonas Vaccine The canine Porphyromonas vaccine is an inactivated Porphyromonas denticanis, P. gulae and P. salivosa bacterin. It has been marketed 'as an adjunct to professional dental cleaning, periodontal therapy, and owner-administrated dental care routines' to prevent periodontitis, as demonstrated by a reduction in bone changes (bone loss/sclerosis) in mice used as an experimental model. The manufacturer recommends that primary vaccination consist of 2 doses given subcutaneously 3 weeks apart. The product license is currently conditional as efficacy and potency have not been demonstrated in dogs. Based on existing evidence, the UC Davis VMTH does not currently recommend routine vaccination of dogs for periodontal disease with this vaccine, and the vaccine is not stocked by our pharmacy." Pfizer also lists formaldehyde as an ingredient in this vaccine. This is a carcinogen. http://www.pfizerah.com/PAHimages/msds_us/PH.pdf This is also from Pfizer: Notice: This Product License Is Conditional. Efficacy And/or Potency Of This Product Have Not Been Fully Demonstrated, Consultation With A Veterinarian Is Recommended. I came across these stories from people who gave the shot to their pets.... I worked for a vet for several years and have owned animals all my life. I decided to give the vaccine to my three dogs (2 Chihuahua mixes and 1 Beagle mix). I waited a year in case it would be pulled for any problems. All of my dogs have become ill from the vaccine. My Beagle mix was lethargic and screamed in pain for about 2 days then was completely fine. The Chihuahua mixes however had many problems. Both started shaking a few hours after receiving the shots (first vac then 2 weeks later w/booster). This was also accompanied by screaming if they were picked up, both screamed in pain when they had to walk down the stairs and one woke up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. My other Chihuahua also had severe diarrhea for 4 days. The first time, the symptoms lasted 4-5 days for both at which point they recovered to there normal selves. I am now on day two after the booster with the exact same symptoms as first time. I would recommend that if you have a small dog, you thoroughly research this drug. I will also be contacting Pfizer to report the problems. I think this vaccine will help prevent periodontal disease which plagues dogs especially small breeds but the initial problems it has caused have made me think twice about ever giving it to my dogs again or recommending it to anyone with small dogs. My two shetland sheepdogs had the vaccine. One dog has had non stop pruritis (itching) in the area where the vaccine was given. She cannot stop biting the area and she is losing fur there. The muscle tissue is raised and has formed a 10 cm x 8 cm lump at the site of injection. Added to this this dog is doing what another person wrote on this forum--she whimpers a lot and if one tries to pick her up she yelps as if in pain. I would never, ever, give this vaccine to a dog under any circumstances. Pfizer in their literature lists the side effects as minimal but do not elaborate specifically on what they are. I noticed the lump today. Thought that the issue was a skin allergy. It is not. It is directly at the site of the injection of that Pfizer vaccine. Off to the vet on Monday with this. Would like to think that Pfizer would incur the veterinary costs related to this but doubt it very much. I have e-mailed them. To Shetland Sheepdog lady: I wrote about my three dogs having problems with the vaccine. All three had injection site lumps that disappeared within a week or so. However, my one Chihuahua mix now has a chronic cough, developed pulmonary edema that is not cardiac related and is in severe distress. Cough started right after the injection. I am wondering if there is a connection but don't want to jump to conclusions as she is an older dog and was adopted only a year ago. I do have to wonder though why it started right after the vaccine and the doctor is completely stumped as to the cause after x-rays, EKG and ultrasound revealed no definitive diagnoses for the edema or cough. Antibiotics, heart meds (enepril) and cough suppressants have done nothing. If anyone may have had a similar issue, please respond. I would love to find out what’s going on. My 16 week old lab puppy recieved the vaccination 10 days ago....3 days after the shot she would yelp every time I went to pick her up, and then 2 days later she began not using her back leg, she would cry out in severe pain all throught the night...i took her to an emergency vet at 3am to find out she was now not using her back long OR one of her front legs....it has now been 10 days since she recieved the shot and 6 days since her first symptoms showed up...every day the pain switches from leg to leg, she can not walk well and yelps in pain any time she moves...the doctor first prescribed 50mg of a pain killer every 24 hours and yesterday had to have 200mg to leviate her pain(i called to get the doctor to okay each dosage before i gave it to her) if this is the cause of my puppy's pain, and I am not sure that it is, but I would absolutely never reccomend this vaccination to even my worst enemy. Watching my dog suffer and not being able to do anything has been the worst thing I have ever had to go through in my entire life. If you have any questions or comments or HELP please please please email me at bama716@aol.com thanks There were more stories but these are typical....I would give this some serious thought about the benefits to risk with this vaccine ......

| This vaccine is way too new. Does anybody really know if it is safe? Not yet. Their teeth still need to be brushed and they may still need dentals. Not something I would give right now. I wouldn't give any vaccine in the same say as a surgery if it is avoidable. Their bodies are already going through enough that day.
