| Question about food allergies and Natural Balance I noticed Heidi (she is almost 2 years old) was scratching her face, biting her paws, and scratching the inside of her ears. I do know that she does not have fleas. I looked up those symptoms and came up with food allergies. She currently eats Nutro Ultra small breed adult. I switched her to Natural Balance sweet potato & fish (which she has been eating for 3 days now) and I noticed her scratching/biting at paws has gotten worse. Is this normal or would I even see an affect from the new food so soon? Thanks for the help. |

| Hi there, I feed my babies Natural Balance Original Ultra & my baby girl does the same thing! I thought it was food allergies too, but I asked my vet & she said food allergies are very rare...maybe it's fleas. I use Frontline Plus on all my babies, so it couldn't be fleas...wrong! These pests hide in the carpet, any cracks & crevices, since it's cold out. There seemed to be an outbreak in my home when it was cold couple of weeks ago (I live in CA) & we had the heater on 24-7. They started popping up here & there, everywhere. Plus Fish & Sweet Potato shouldn't cause allergies since it's a single protein, & usually, if they're allergic, it would most likely be chicken. Make sure when switching food, do it gradually...or the poor babies will get diarrhea. |

| I am pretty sure it is not fleas. If it was my other Yorkie would be having the same issues, and he is not. Any other suggestions... |

| Only about 10% of allergies are caused by food and 90% are environmental. You can try switching foods to see if it helps but it can take 60-90 days to see results. Whatever you do, I would not put her back on Nutro. It has been blamed on illness and death in a lot of dogs. Those symptoms do sound like allergies to me. If you think it is food, you will need a novel protein and grain source. Was she eating fish in the Nutro? If she was, you may need to try a different food.

| It could be an allergy to something else. I once had a Yorkie who was allergic to grass.
