Bladder Stones Hi. Some of you may have read some of my other posts about my adopting a 6 year old yorkie on Dec 30th whose owners surrendered him back to the breeder. He had not been neutered and was diagnoised with an enlarged protstate. We took him to the vet yesterday for his pre-op workup because we were getting him a dental and neutered. To our surprise the vet x-rayed him and found 4 bladder stones. She suggested we surgically remove them before it became an emergency. So Cody was operated on last night. We were told this am that he is doing fine and we can take him home probably Saturday. Have any of you dealt with this? The vet thinks the previous owners fed him table food because of his teeth and stones. Can you recommend a good food for him since I know the vet will suggest Science Diet? I'm sorry for the long post but have been frantic since last night. Is there a good chance he won't have this problem again? Any words of advice/encouragement will be most welcomed. Thx

I'm so glad to hear surgery went well. I have not dealt with stones but my Odie has had struvite crystals. I hate to recommend food as there are a lot more knowledgeable people here than I. You will get help I'm sure. Please keep us posted on how everything goes for you both.

First you need to know what kind of stones he had. Were they struvite or oxalate? He needs to have lots of fresh water and some vets recommend wet food as this contains more water. If they are struvite stones they can be somewhat controlled with a special diet. Oxalate stones are more serious and can return again. Do research and talk to your vet to educate yourself. You may need to use one of the vet special diets like hills or science diet or make his food yourself which is much trickier. Good luck
