| At what age does a yorkie go into her first heat? I'm just wondering because my girl is 7 months on the 23rd of Jan. (she gets spayed that day) and she has been licking and licking. I'm not sure if it's just a cleaning thing or if it is signaling something to come? What happens when it does come, how long does it last, what extra steps need to be taken, etc.? I've never owned a dog that has had a heat, they've always been spayed before then.

| I really don't know exactly how old a yorkie girl is when she has her first heat but my Piper was spayed a little over 7 months and she showed no signs that she was coming into heat.

| When they have their first heat varies from dog to dog and can be anytime between 6-12 months and sometimes a little earlier or later. If she does go into heat it would be better to delay her spay for a month or two afterward because of the possibility of bleeding during surgery |

| My furbaby went into heat about a week before her spay surgery. I was so upset because I wanted to get her spayed before her 1st heat, but encountered some problems with the vet. They just wouldn't listen to me and as a result of waiting so long, she ended up going into heat. I changed vets once she was through with her heat and they did a fabulous job with her, plus I saved some money as they were cheaper. With my baby, I could tell she was going into heat by excessive licking around her area and her area also started to swell. I don't remember exactly how long her heat lasted, but with yorkies being so small, luckily they don't "dribble" as much as large dogs were. Like others have said though, every puppy is different. One might have a longer heat cycle than the other or vice versa. Either way, you'll little one will come through just fine. |
