Fiona was scheduled to get spayed on 11/4/08, then a day after she turned 7 months old she came into heat, and pushed her spay back until 11/25/08. Typically dogs/cats should get spayed/neutred when they are 6 months of age, but that can change on size of the dog and the weight. I argued with my vet that the end of October, early November was going to be too late for her to get fixed, but he insisted. Fiona really was licking a lot, was very tired, and just sorta keeping to herself when she came into heat. It's basically a drops of blood, I bought her a diaper with sanitary pads to put in it- when I wasn't home and she was in her crate, i took the diaper off and when we went outside. I kept her with me the entire time she was in heat, since i didnt want anything to happen. Every dog is different, but they are usually in heat for a good 3-4 weeks. When Fiona did get spayed the doctor said she had a "false pregnancy" It's basically where the dog doesn't realize they arent supposed to have puppies, and the body goes through the motions of being pregnant. But, she handled everything fine, and has been perfect since.
