Post Over Vaccinating

My 4 year old yorkie, Sparkplug, has his annual vet appointment coming up soon and I have heard so much about how over vaccinating your dog can shorten their life. And that the vaccines they get when they are a puppy stay with them for the duration of their life... kind of how when we are kids we get our shots and then we are good. I have done some research, but I am curious, what is everyone else doing? Has anyone done research on this yet?

If you search for "vaccines" on YT, tons of information will come up.
They should have their puppy shots, then a booster one year later then everything beyond that is really debatable. This goes for modified live viruses. Rabies has to be given at certain times by law. Non-core vaccines are usually not recommended at all.

I agree with this!

Here is a link to the AAHAs Canine Vaccine Guideline. http://www.ufsheltermedicine.com/new...ine_Vax_GL.pdf
This is the group that sets the protocol for which vets are 'supposed' to follow, doesnt usually happen that way. You will see that it recommended that after the initial puppy shots it is advised that vaccines only be given based on titer testing results AND a dogs lifestyle being considered. (The chart for this starts around page 4 I think) There should not be an across the board, same for every dog, vaccine rule. There are arguments that titer testing is not a 100% accurate way to test a dogs immunities, but from what I understand vaccines are not 100% either and can actually do damage from over vaccinating. You are also not supposed to vaccinate a dog unless it is completely healthy. Which means no allergies, colds, recent illness, ANYTHING. How often do vets check a dogs health before they give a shot?? Sorry to get on a soap box here, but this has become something I feel very strongly about. I see a more hollistic type vet (who also believes that there is a place for conventional medicine if used properly, I love that!) once a year and in the next couple months I will be doing the first set of titers on Wookie in place of standard vaccination.

We went to a new vet on Monday. She advised me to think about not giving Mia annual vaccinations any more. She weighs 3.5 pounds. I will have her and my other dog ( 5 yr old female) titer tested before vaccinating them any more.

I found a new vet last year that does titer testing and Peanut did not have to have any shots, still holding. She is a great vet that agrees with less shots and better foods so glad I switched.

So are you guys forgoing the rabies shot as well, or doing what the law says? I think I have made up my mind to not do them if his titers say he doesn't need them. There was a dog that we boarded where I was working and he had demilination (sp?)that they say the probable cause was over vaccinating of the rabies shot. It was awful, she couldn't walk with her back legs at all, beautiful dalmation. It broke my heart.

I would definitely not do every vaccination every year. Some vets will recommend yearly vaccinations, but it is completely unnecessary. Bordatella is the only one that needs to be given anywhere near that frequently in order to work.

Rabies every three years, DHPP every three years, and Bordatella once a year is a perfectly reasonable protocol. Lepto and Corona vaccines are debatable, and lepto vaccines in particular can sometimes be dangerous. Vaccinating against Lymes disease may be worthwhile depending on where you live-- when I lived in southwest Michigan, we saw a LOT of Lymes cases.

It's important to decide for yourself what vaccines are important for your dog depending on her lifestyle and where you live. A dog that goes to the dog park every week, hikes in the woods, and takes obedience classes with unfamiliar dogs is going to be at a lot more risk than a dog that usually only goes in her own yard and spends most of her time with her owners. Trying to follow a vaccination protocol that is designed for one dog would not be the best thing for the other dog.

I'm so glad to find this topic. Vaccines have been a sore-spot for a few years. We can't prove it and I've found little information to support it , but my mom took her dog 2 year old Maggie (not a Yorkie) in for shots, and within 3 days, began having seizures. The seizures began coming at 3-5 minute intervals and she had to put the poor little dog down out of compassion for her. Her "former" vet told her it had nothing to do with the vaccines and was generally unconcerned.

I give my Rilee rabies because we have to, but I'm scared to death of the vaccines because of what happened to Maggie. Can anyone shed any light on this?

The only thing my inside dogs get are rabis(which I haven't even had one given to the 7 mo old yet, as she's too tiny), I've decided to do the 3 year rabis. The outside dogs get rabis and distemper, and that's it.

I'm so sorry about Maggie!.......If Maggie was in perfect health before this shot then your suspicions are most likely correct.....It really gets me upset when vets do this out of greed or ignorance on their part....If it was the vaccine he would never admit it, that would make him responsible and liable.....

All the information you need is out there.....just google " vaccine adverse reactions" or "overvaccinations in pets" and you'll be shocked at what you will find.....as in this site....

What You Should Know About the Rabies Vaccine for Dogs

The vets don't tell you anything about vaccines except that they are "safe" that couldn't be farther from the truth. If you choose to do vaccines the ones recommended are distemper, parvo and rabies. The vet is supposed to only do ONE vaccine at a visit, the next vaccine is not to be done for at least 3-4 weeks. Never do combo shots as in the DHPP, there's usually antigens in there that are not needed. Be prepared for the vet to poo poo your research, been there done that with them. But I've done my homework so it don't work with me anymore......Wylie's mom just posted a chart that is a good one to go by if your unsure on what to do......By the way if a vet tells you that you have to bring your pet in for yearly boosters , run like heck, boosters are a hoax. As far as I'm concerned the vet is committing fraud, and malpractice, I think a vet should be required to explain all the risks and benefits for each vaccine and let the client then decide if they believe it it is worth the risk to the pet. ......

Sorry so long but this subject is just too important to ignore, this decision has the greatest impact on your pets future health...................Good luck......
