| Teething and Vomiting Hi, hoping to get a few answers about Mahina. She's been teething for maybe a month now (I've saved about 10 teeth! ) Plus that saves me money when it comes to her spay! Well, she hasn't been wanting to chew on anything hard lately, which is expected. I've given her a few teething toys and there are some she favors but I'm wanting some other ways to relieve her pain. I can tell when her teeth are really bothering her cuz she won't eat and she wants me to massage her mouth. I know I can give her baby asprin 1/4 tablet... but how often and for how many days? When it comes to eating she's hesitant but she will eat. I've crushed up her kibble, should I add a little wet food, or maybe just some warm water? Basically is there anything else I can do for her. Also, should I be concerned if she's vomited up food. I think it's partially digested... all brown (the color of her food) and there's still some chunks as I think she swallows some whole (I didn't crush her food up today). She's only done it tonight and then a while back when she first started teething. Tonight she went back to eat some more and drink water. I free-feed but she only eats in the morning and night and MAYBE a nibble or two throughout the day. Thank you in advance

| I'm sorry no one has answered your post yet. I think if you are still having trouble you should probably take her to the vet. It isn't normal for a puppy to vomit when they are teething. It isn't unheard of but not normal. How is she doing now? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Who told you to give baby aspirin? Puppies don't have the enzymes necessary to process the aspirin. Quote:

| I have also heard that aspirin is dangerous to give dogs. Yikes, please try other methods of treatment.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Don't get me wrong, it can be used on an older dog, but from what I've read, it shouldn't be used on puppies. Don't give any medication without checking with a vet first. Ibuprofen and Tylenol are said to be worse, and can cause long term liver damage.

| no aspirin please My vet told me it was okay to give my little 3 lb teacup yorkie a 1/4 of an aspirin for his teething pain but a few months later he began bleeding internally and was rushed to the hospital because he went into a seizure. He was hospitalized for a week and they said the bleeding was caused by the aspirin. They also said he has a liver problem which isn't good...I really didn't see much relief from the aspirin so if you can skip it please do...I found freezing chamomile tea into ice cubes helped or freezing a wet washcloth for him to chew on also helped. Although they can't connect the liver problems to the aspirin and it is most likely something he was born with but the internal bleeding set off the whole chain of events. The sad part is that he still has all his baby teeth along with the adult ones which are killing him but he is too weak to undergo surgery to have them removed. So the only thing I can suggest is to take your lil one to the vet because throwing up in these little guys needs to be check out ASAP. Theo only threw up a few times before he went into a seizure and thank God we got him to the hospital in time to save him. I will say a prayer that your little one is okay and hopefully his teeth will come out... |

| Oh wow, I made this thread a long time ago. I totally forgot about it. I don't think I ended up giving Mahina anything, I might have given her 1/4 tablet of baby asprin and that was it. In the Sick&Injured there's a sticky "Doggy first aid kit" and it says 1/4-1/2 tablet of baby asprin. That's why I assumed it was okay. I knew something was bothering her because she wouldn't even eat her wet food. She was always pawing at her mouth and wanting me to rub her gums. I mostly froze her teething toys and those seemed to help. She never threw up after that one time. She's done teething though and recently went in for a spay and she had no baby teeth to be removed. Yay! Saved me $17/tooth haha

| Nikko almost vomited today, or at least acted like he was about to... turns out a tooth was lose and dangling in the back of his mouth, and I think it was tickling his throat in an uncomfortable way! I reached in his mouth after his choke-ish episode and felt a very very lose tooth in the way far back... a couple minutes later he spit it out on the carpet. We're trying to bust as many teeth out of Nikko skull as we can before he gets neutered at the beginning of next month... $16.50 per tooth didn't sound too bad to me until I started doing the math if he needed several teeth pulled... in the last 4 days we've collected four larger teeth, and I know that a couple weeks ago he'd already lost most of his teeny tiny front teeth and grown them back. Anyways, I know this is an old thread, but I'm going to share what we've been doing lately anyways. His gums seem to hurt him off and on, he's eating fairly sporadically all the sudden, and we need those teeth OUT! So we've been freezing his kibble in ice cubes. I figure they're hard and crunchy and might help loosen some more teeth, and they're cold so they'll make his gums feel better, and he's also getting help receiving his healthy daily dose of kibble. We also play lots of tug of war whenever his teeth aren't hurting him too badly, and he also gets bully sticks, though he hasn't been as interested in them lately :-( We tried giving him a frozen baby teether as a chew toy, but it was in pieces within seconds, and we had to take it away for fear of him ingesting the plastic. I'd love to hear if anyone else has any helpful suggestions for either helping ease the pain or helping lose the teeth asap. Lauren & Nikko |

Oh that must have been scary, grabbing a loose back tooth, glad he was able to get rid of it without too much trauma. You gave some good tips on helping during teething; I never have heard about freezing the kibble in water before, what a clever suggestion, it would help numb the gums. I've read others tried the human baby teething rings with no success, same problem you had, the teething ring was chewed up in minutes, but I did see a dog teething rings at Target, and some you can freeze. As Cheryl1022 mentioned freezing a washcloth works well for some dogs. Prices per tooth vary, I think Joey's vet only charged $7.00 per tooth, and I've read some charge even less, $16.50 is on the top end of the scale. When human babies are teething they are actually sprouting teeth through gums that have never had teeth before, the tooth is erupting in fresh skin, many secondary problems such as fevers, colds, flu can be associated with teething, and it really hurts, their teething rings could more adequately be called gumming rings. So thats why you can't use human teething rings on dogs. However when a dog is teething, he basically just losing his teeth, often because a new one is coming in, this is similar to a 5 year old losing a tooth, and as some of you can recall, there isn't as much pain associated with losing a baby tooth to get the second tooth, just lots of excitement, cause that meant the tooth fairy would pay a visit!
