| Not drinking enough water UTI? I was at work when my hubby texted me to tell me Louis' urine was brown! I immediately called his vet and they asked us to bring him in. The vet took a urine sample, Thank goodness for pee-pads cause we were able to show the vet what his urine actually looked like... bloody He also took some x-rays and it seemed that he did not have any stones. The urine sample will be ready tomorrow. In the mean time we are giving him antibiotics and hoping he will drink water, but he isn't His urine has gotten better, and he doesn't seem to be in any pain, but drinking more water will definitely help. Does anyone know a trick or anything that may help him want to drink more water????? Thanks in advance for all the help

| Canned or homecooked food supplies enough moisture to where some dogs don't need to drink much at all. I would try that. Not all stones are visable on xray. Ammonium urate only show up on ultrasound, so I would find out if there are crystals in his urine...

| As Crystal already mentioned...ammonium urate stones do NOT show up on an x-ray and only show up on ultrasounds, so don't rule out stones. If your baby eats kibble, add equal parts water to the kibble at each meal. If your baby eats 1/4 cup of kibble at each meal, add *at least* 1/4 cup of water to that meal. Do not let it sit out unrefrigerated too long because it will spoil. If you don't want to do this, then canned food is very high in moisture and will definitely help your baby take in the much needed moisture. You could also give seedless watermelon for a treat since it's pretty high in moisture. Make sure the vet is checking for crystals too. Please post the results of the urinalysis and what kind of crystals they find if they do find any. Prayers that your baby feels better soon.

| Update Thanks to the two of you for your suggestions. I called the vet and he found 0 bacteria in his urine, BUT he found white blood cells and pritein which indicates an infectio or wound of some kind. SO that freaked me out. He basically he does not know what the issue is. He said for now continue the antibiotic because there is an infection somewhere and if his urine does not clear up by Monday we will need to bring him in. We asked for some blood work or any more test but he thought that for now it would be best to hold off. I thought about it and decided I will hold off. His water intake issue is better. I had y hubby boil two chicken breast and we added that at room temperature to his water and he loved it. He has been drinking water like never before. His urine is clear. ALL CLEAR and his spirits are back up. Whatever it is it looks like we are winning the battle. I bathed and groomed him to make sure he is clean of any filth. All in all things are looking up. Again, thank you for all your help!!!!!

| Drinking lots of water will help dilute his urine quite a bit, so that's why you're probably seeing the clear urine. If after the antibiotics, his urine gets dark again or he has any similar issues, there's something more going on...My yorkie had several "UTI's" even though they weren't finding any bacteria either before finally we found out that he had bladder stones...which, by the way, were not seen on x-rays, only u/s. He was diagnosed with these bladder stones one day when his urethra actually became blocked due to stones...I wish the vet would have been more proactive in helping us figure out that he had stones b/c we could have been helping him before.. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if it happens again, I would insist they do a BAT and possibly u/s.
