Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Abnormal blood work We went to the vet today since Max was sneezing and was congested, or so I thought. The vet could not hear anything with the stethoscope, he took xrays, one of his sinus, throat, trachea, the other one of his lungs, lungs looked clear, so did the rest.He run a blood test which came back abnormal, low platelets and some other count were high.He prescribed prednisone in case of inflammation, he is loosing his "voice", it sounds really funny when he barks. I'm really worried, not because of the cold, but because of the blood counts. Before I give him his med. I like to hear your opinions. The vet did not seem to concerned. I don't remember ever feeling like this, my kids were never sick, nothing serious anyways, and this is driving me nuts.

| What is the platelet count and what else was off in the blood work? Ellie had a low platelet count a couple months back. It is possible that the platelets "clumped" in the tube and it looked low but wasn't. It was reran and came back normal. Both times it was sent to an outside lab. Ellie's vet says that when she is looking at platelets, she sends to the lab because in-house testing yields questionable results for this. So it could be that this was an in-house test or that they clumped. I would have it redone if it was low enough for concern.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | It was an in house test, he rerun the test to rule out Lyme disease. I also read that when blood is drawn from the jugular, in small dogs, this could happen. What has me really worried is how high the MCHC is, 43.6 (range 31.0-36.0) so again, I read that low PLT, and high MCHC could be signs of cancer, among other things.

| Another possibility is that the sample was smaller than normal, which can easily throw off the values in a blood count. Yorkies are not usually easy to draw blood from-- they're wiggly and have tiny veins. If the vet wasn't alarmed by the abnormal numbers, there's probably a reason.
