| How Much to Feed? I have been transitioning from Royal Canin to Innova EVO and EVO says to feed 1/2 cup per day. He ate like 3/4-1 cup of Royal Canin per day and he was underweight. Is 1/4 cup twice a day enough? He eats it so fast and then does reverse sneezing after. He didn't do this with Royal Canin because I don't think he liked how it tasted. He is 1 year old and 4 lbs. I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The amount on the side of the bag is just a guideline. No one can tell you the exact amount; this will vary from brand to brand and dog to dog. Saying he weighs 4 pounds doesn't give us much information. Ask the vet what he should weigh and work toward that amount. I found having a scale has helped me keep track of Joey's weight better, and I weigh him once a week, I alter his food amounts according to the weight on the scale. Joey can normally eat more in the winter because the summers are so hot here, he doesn't get as much exercise, so the amount he eats varies due to the amount of exercise. Have you thought about free feeding?

| When I used to have Sasha on Nutro, she would eat 1/2 cup twice a day. Once I switched her to Solid Gold, I thought that it seemed like an awful lot to be feeding her especially since it's a better grade of food as did some other YT members. She now gets 1/3 cup twice a day and I free feed it. She doesn't much eat at all in the morning, usually around the late afternoon-evening she'll go and eat and then usually will eat a 2nd serving kinda late at night. Everyones dog is different though. Like "Nancy1999" said, I would think about asking your vet how much he should be weighing and maybe get his/her opinion on how much he should be getting. Explain his eating habits to his/her so he knows what you're dealing with. Good luck! |

| Thank you for the advice. For now I will feed him however much he can eat in 15 minutes so I don't underfeed him. He goes in for his stitches to be removed in a week (from neutering) so I will ask the vet then, and ask about how much he should weigh, etc. I can't free feed him since I have a cat that can open doors and get to the food. Silly cat. Where I live there is wonderful weather so there are only a few days where it gets too rainy and cold to go on walks. I love the weather, not too hot but not too cold! |
