The amount on the side of the bag is just a guideline. No one can tell you the exact amount; this will vary from brand to brand and dog to dog. Saying he weighs 4 pounds doesn't give us much information. Ask the vet what he should weigh and work toward that amount. I found having a scale has helped me keep track of Joey's weight better, and I weigh him once a week, I alter his food amounts according to the weight on the scale. Joey can normally eat more in the winter because the summers are so hot here, he doesn't get as much exercise, so the amount he eats varies due to the amount of exercise. Have you thought about free feeding?
