| Occasionally, Maggie has been known to omit a rather foul, "fishy" smell from her vagina. It is an actual clear discharge that wipes off on our furniture (and bodies! ) In the past, I'd attributed it to her heat/false pregnancy and such (I know the same thing sometimes occurs with humans during the menstrual cycle) but I assumed once she was spayed, it wouldn't be a problem. Once during her actual heat (I know some of you remember), I was worried that she had pyometra so we took her in and she got a course of antibiotics. Soon afterwards, we had her spayed. Her recent treatment and surgery make me doubt that she has any kind of infection but maybe I'm overlooking something? It's not very often, maybe every couple of months and it only lasts for a day or two. Any ideas? Should we call the vet?

| I would call the vet. Could be an infection. Keep us posted! |

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | A yeast infection can smell this way, and since she has recently been on antibiotics, they could be the cause. Antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad, and good bacteria are responsible for keeping yeast in check. Your vet can give you a cream, and some people recommend yogurt everything you are given antibiotics to keep the good bacteria around.

Also, do you think the vet will just give us a cream or do you think they'll need to see her?

| Yup, probably a vaginitis or yeast type issue.

Yeast infections can go away sometimes without treatment, she might have been getting one, but was fighting it off herself, and then the antibodics threw her system off. Since I'm not a vet, they might want to see her. You could just mention the name Nancy1999, and see if that helps. Seriously, he might want to rule out other things, such as anal glands that need to be expressed, sometime this can cause a fishy odor as well.
