| ...is this normal? Aeropostale has been "coughing". i dont know if its normal or not. he doesnt do it all the time, its mostly at bedtime. i woke up at 4:30 am this morning because he kept "coughing" and it was hard and loud. it almost sounded like he couldnt breathe, or like he was choking on something. it scared the bejesus out of me! i jumped up and was patting his back, thinking he may be choking on a hairball or something. we opened up his mouth and checked but we didnt see anything in his mouth. he quit for a little while but then started doing it again. when he does it, it doesnt last for more than a few minutes. i was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this "coughing" and if so, is there a way to stop it? thanks in advance for any help.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you heard of "reverse sneezing"? It's pretty common in yorkies, esp. puppies (they'll sometimes outgrow it, for the most part). It's sort of rhythmic, in-out, sometimes has a sort of "dry-sucking-sound". So, does it sound like that? If you genuinely think it's a cough, you may want to get checked for kennel cough. You didn't recently get him a vaccine for kennel cough, did you? If yes, that could have actually given him kennel cough. Hope he feels better soon!

| You just picked him up yesterday, right? Has he been to the vet yet? You really need him evaluated right away after you get him. It could be a number of things. The vet would be the best person to tell you what's going on. Other than that, how's he doing? I know you're excited to have him with you finally.

| Does it sound kind of like he's gasping for breath and coughing at the same time. My Aussie make a sound like that, as if her airway is partially blocked...but not completely. I don't have an answer for it but I understand how you fell about it. Izzy does it occasionally and it always startles me.

Thor's Human Donating Member | That really sounds like reverse sneezing to me. It sounds exactly like the dog is coughing up a hairball (IMO). Just to be safe you can get him checked by vet, HOWEVER: make sure your vet knows about reverse sneezing. I mentioned this on another thread, but a friend of mine took her healthy yorkie to four different vets before it was identified as harmless. Does the puppy seem distressed otherwise? |
