| Be strong! Being overweight is not only hard on his heart and lungs, it's bad for his joints. Obesity can also cause diabetes. I learned that the hard way when I adopted Lady. Too many treats made her two pounds overweight which is obese on a tiny dog and she was diagnosed with diabetes a year and a half after I adopted her. Seven years and twice daily insulin shots later, I wish someone had warned me before her pancreas stopped producing insulin. Green beans were and still are our lifesaver. Lady likes the cut frozen beans slightly thawed. For a treat I put them in her Busy Buddy Twist and Treat. They are high in fiber and make them feel full. |

| Thor's Human Donating Member | Not to be a wet blanket, but it is very unhealthy for dogs to be overweight -- it cuts down their life span by a lot. And as Ladymom mentioned, for a small dog, even a pound or two can be obese. You can tell if your (grown) dog is in good shape by running your hand along his side. You should be able to easily feel his ribs, but they should not be jutting out. As has been suggested, dogs like fruit (not grapes), so you can treat with that, or chicken, and obviously, more exercise. I have the opposite problem with my boy. He's so skinny, and I can't seem to get more weight on him. I feed him ridiculous amounts of treats during the day and good dog food in the morning and at night, but he's a skinny minny. I do love the title of this thread. Porky yorky, ha! |

| Nope! Grapes, Raisins and Onions are toxic. Stick to carrots, green beans, apples (NEVER the seeds), bananas... heck mine will eat broccoli, peas... they love fruits and veggies!

I try to get fresh whenever possible--it's about $2-3 for a huge bag...which isn't bad for fresh...and it goes a long way. However, we do frozen if fresh isn't available... I haven't thought of stuffing them in a toy---that's a good idea!

| Asparagus is a staple in my dog's diet. They get it at least once a week, if not more often.

| Yes, I know how bad it is for them to be even a little overweight. I think it was actually from reading one of Ladymom's posts that I became aware of how serious it could be. Joking is simply my way of dealing with it. I promise you that I am not taking the situation nearly as lightly as I sound. I need to try the green beans. I hadn't thought of that. One interesting thing he really likes is brussel sprouts! Can you believe it?

| Now I am confused. He seems to pass all of the tests...Maybe just comparing his 9.5lbs to Kandi's barely 4lbs is making him seem like he's overweight? I need to get him evaluated. I respect and trust our vet, so that's what I'll do. In the meantime, more exercise and fewer treats won't hurt. Thanks everyone.
