Yes, the cookie monster, Gizmo is now on a cookie/treat restricted diet. He's always been a bit of a teapot, but 9.5 lbs. is a little much! lol The vet didn't say anything, but...with Kandi in the house now, it's pretty hard to deny that he could lose a pound or so to be healthier. And from what I've read, even that much extra weight can put a strain on his heart and lungs.

So, we're not changing his food, but we are restricting treats and going on walks more often. Poor Gizmo.

He will miss those yorkie yummies, yogurt drops, and of course...cookies.

Chester weighs 9 lbs and he is not fat, I dont know how tall or long your fur kid is.

LOL I wish that's all mine weighed, she's pushing 14 lbs..

Can barely lift her, but, she's one heck of a fantastic yorkie, gotta love her

Loki is the same way!! He should be around 12 pounds and he's been around 12.5 and my dad came over today and said, "Wow Loki's gained a pound or two" and I totally didn't believe him so I put Loki on the shipping scale (Loki loved that - ha) and he was ALMOST 14 pounds. Ugh. This is the dog who is always hungry unless hes sleeping. He knows he gets a treat after going outside and if I don't give him one he will sit there and stare at the treat jar. He loves walks but walks mean "pee on everything and go home" I feel bad because he and Sammy eat almost the same amount and she is half his size (of course petite as ever!) but she never stops moving.

I might do the green bean diet - replace some of his kibble with green beans... I admit I should walk them more but it's cold and they walk at completely different paces. Sammy walks slowly (she's short!) but at least she walks. Loki RUNS ahead and then abruptly stops to pee on something. I should walk them separately and then I would get twice the exercise, but I think I'm the lazy one

To the poster who was wondering how you can tell- it can be hard with long coat breeds- but when you give your baby a bath- you should notice a waist that goes in- so "curves" if you will- their body should not be the same size all the way down if you are looking from on top- it should come in a bit before their hips. Also when they are wet- look at them when they are standing sideways and you should see where their ribs come down and then it should go up where his tummy is. Lastly - feel your yorkies ribs/spine - you shoudl not be able to feel a layer of fat over them-

Gizmo- Layla understands- she had to loose one pound- which is a lot when you only weigh 7!!! But she enjoyed all the walks and the playing fetch - she did NOT enjoy the cut back on treats

Haha! See that's what I don't get, because Loki keeps getting heavier but he still has a waist and he looks pretty good. Sammy has a very small frame and it's easy to see that she is petite. Loki has a totally different body type and he seems OK but I also see how lazy he is

I don't really have the weather as an excuse in the fall. It's the perfect time for walks. It's during the summer that we can't walk because the heat gets so intense and pavement would burn their paws. I will have to walk them separately. Maybe I can recruit my son to help? Yeah! That would work.

But, I'm lazy too, so we'll see how long I keep it up.

Not a waist like a human but he should taper a bit at the back. When you go to the vet next ask them what the proper weight for Gizmo should be, you should be able to feel slightly his ribs. What is the right weight for one puppy is not always correct for another. My vet said that the skin should move easily as well, but some pups are more muscular than others. So, talk to your vet the next time you go. My girls are 7 and 9 pounds and they are littermates, and the vet said that they are the proper weight for them, even if they gained a little it wouldn't make a great deal of difference.

Shylah and Brynna, said they are really feeling for Gizmo.

Mine, get a lot of excersise on the stairs. When someone goes up, guess what they have to go up too. My little one has a nose problem

she has to know everything that is going on, so they get a lot of excersise going up and down

lol my Molly is on a permenant diet---because she inherited my metabolism

try giving other types of treats, like baby organic carrots ($3/HUGE packet), bell peppers, or green beans boiled in homemade chicken or beef broth (low sodium). This way, he'll still get yummy treats, but he'll be on a diet... Also lean cuts of meat cubes are good snacks
Sometimes I'll spread a little laughing cow light cheese on Molly's bell pepper slice and she goes crazy for it.

Well, it does taper in a little, but I can feel some rolls on his back like loose skin, so I'm assuming that's fat. He's pretty darn solid and the vet hasn't said anything, but cutting back on treats and walking more wouldn't hurt.

if it tapers that's good news! could be worse

I didn't mean a waist like we have- Yorkie Gems described it well!

That might not be fat- layla has those rolls- especialy when she sits- and it is just extra skin. Perhaps he is not as big as you think he is?
