You can tell if your (grown) dog is in good shape by running your hand along his side. You should be able to easily feel his ribs, but they should not be jutting out.
As has been suggested, dogs like fruit (not grapes), so you can treat with that, or chicken, and obviously, more exercise.
I have the opposite problem with my boy. He's so skinny, and I can't seem to get more weight on him. I feed him ridiculous amounts of treats during the day and good dog food in the morning and at night, but he's a skinny minny.
