| First time Yorkie owner..... Hi all. I'm new here and new to the Yorkie breed. I got our Chloe when she was 4 months old. She is now almost 8 months (December 5th) .She is doing very well. She is 2.5 or 3 lbs ( she's a tiny baby) and boy ,she is a feisty little thing I had some questions I wanted to ask you long time Yorkie owners. 1.) I read alot about teething problems here , and I have made an appointment for my Chloe to get her teeth checked next week. I think she has double canine teeth , but I'm not sure. Her breath is downright dreadful!! So I want to have her checked. Is this a common problem and after the teeth are removed were your dogs O.K? I worry about her because she is so tiny. But like I said she is a feisty li'l girl!! 2.) I had her on Science Diet food for puppies ( that is what the breeder had her on) and while she did eat it , she seem indifferent to it. Long story short she got into our other dog Sydney's food and loved it! (It's beneful brand dog food. )It's not puppy food , but she loves eating it. Is it O.K. to let her eat it or should I keep her on puppy food ? I have also seen the recommendations of food here that I will look into , but for now is beneful O.K. or should I just give her her puppy food? Thank you for any help. I have been looking over the pictures of your dogs(or baby's) and they are SO CUTE!!! Chloe's Mama |

| Welcome to YT. Sounds like she didn't lose her baby teeth. They may still fall out by themselves. If not, a good time to have them removed is when she get's spayed. I'd "make" her eat puppy food. It will be better for her development. I'd feed her either Wellness or Natural Balance puppy food.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | As she been spayed? Usually they remove retained baby teeth at the same time they are under anaesthetic for the spay. And yes, she will be fine after her teeth are pulled. It's not necessary to have her on a puppy formula food...but a high quality food is recommended. You will not find high quality foods at the grocery store...you'll need to seek out speciality stores. Some foods to consider ~ Wellness Taste of the wild Nature's variety

| Thank you all. She hasn't been spayed yet. Her vet appointment is next week for her to get her teeth checked , and for the vet to go over the spaying details with me. I guess if needed they will remove the teeth at the same time as the spaying. I didn't have to worry about that with our other dog. This is new to us. I have been reading here (alot) and I think I will try the Royal canine , wellness or the Blue(?...can't remember the whole name now) dog food. I really want a good quality food for both my dogs( and I honestly thought beneful was a good dog food) but my little Syd Vicious ( she is 3 years old) is soooo picky an so far the only thing we found she likes to eat is beneful and homemade chicken. Thanks again , I will keep reading. Chloe and Sydney's (Syd Vicious) mama |

| HI , Just wanted to update and ask a question.... Chloe had her vet visit and does have to get some teeth removed The vet said she was in otherwise great condition. Chloe even let me brush her teeth without to much fuss...and her breath is better because of it !! They will remove her teeth when they spay her. We have it set for after the holidays ! We also are getting our other dog spayed at that time. My new vet told me about the cancer risk etc. with not spaying (something our old vet never told us.) So both girls are getting done. So my question is ..How do you take care of them after a spaying and teeth removal ? Do they have to be still and not eat ? I know the vet will go over this with me in January , but I just want to have an idea of what to expect. I feel sorry for them already. How long did it take your pups to recover ? and my Sydney is three now , is it harder for older dogs? Thank you....

Post surgery you will want to limit activity for about a week. The first 2 days they are a bit groggy (some pups aren't and need to be restrained! LOL) so its pretty easy... You mostly dont want them pulling their stitches out by running, playing or jumping. You also need to make sure they don't lick or chew at the incision. Some vets recommend using a cone, but a lot of people on YT buy baby onesies and cut a hole for the butt and tail and keep them dressed so that can't get to their bellies. Plus they look cute!! As for the teeth pulling, that heals REALLY fast and most dogs will eat normally within a day. Ella ate that night, even after having over 10 pulled! She also drank normally and started chewing on sticks within a week! You want to make sure they eat and drink normally...but mostly, the mouth heals quickly and on its own.... Let us know how it goes! Oh, one more thing! Please don't feed Royal Canin, its not so great...Wellness is a MUCH better choice.

| Oh and a great resource for health and nutrition in Maryland is the store Bark. They have two locations - one in Olney and one in Gaithersburg. I know plenty more, too if you need advice. Bark Natural Homepage And here is a link to Washingtonian's pet recommendations for stores, vets and specialists in the DC/Maryland/ Virginia area Guide to Pets in Washington, Maryland and Virginia (washingtonian.com)

| Thank you for all the information , and the links I will check them out. Wow , ten teeth !! I'm glad to hear that puppies/dogs recover quickly..I was nervous ! Chloe will probably lay still as long as I am with her , she usually loves to run and play , but if I sit on the sofa she always wants up with me. Sydney on the other hand , I can't imagine how we will keep her still. She is one of the most energetic dogs I have ever seen. She will run from sunup till sundown...that's why we love her...even our forever energetic boys can't seem to wear her down I am thinking we will have to use the cone on her and keep her in a play yard for a bit. As for the food we are trying "blue" all natural food. They seem to like it ( well Sydney did Chloe took a while to warm up to it ) but are not to fond of the lifesource bits...they keep leaving those on the floor We looked at Royal Canine , but wanted something that both dogs could eat ( after Chloe is out of the puppy stage) so we went with Blue. It seems like a nutritious food. Hopefully they will get use to the lifesource bits , or we will have to try another brand. THANKS AGAIN
