| Hole in my baby's head! My 13 week old yorkie baby has an opening in her skull--kinda like what a newborn human baby has (a soft spot). Is this normal? It's at the top of her head. Will it go away? THanks. |

| I am not really familiar but I saw a thread on this not too long ago. Sorry not sure which discussion area on YT. Do a search. I think it said that if it was dime sized or smaller it would likely close or come close to and if it is bigger it will likely remain there. |

| At such a young age I think this is pretty normal,,, it should close up as the pup grows up. Congrats on the new baby and Welcome to YT. |

| Mine had it also and it did close as they got older. The vet will normally keep an eye on it but I had them re-check at about 20 weeks and it was closed.

Senior Yorkie Talker | from what ive heard, its completely normal. because their brain is not fully developed, the skull is a little oversized and is left open on the top. when it is fully developed it should start to form cartilage. my moms dog, tucker, took FOREVER to fill in the top of his head... but my lexi's head was hard as a rock by the time she was 12wks |

| my baby has it too it's called an open fontanel. she's almost 4 months old, and it can take up to a year to close, but it usually closes after a few months. i assume my baby will have it forever. it's supposedly fine, they'll live a long normal life, but we just have to be careful w/ it. so i try not to touch her there.

| Thank you! Thanks for the info. You all are so nice. I really appreciate the speedy responses. Fortunately the hole is pretty small. Last edited by iluvkst; 11-12-2008 at 05:11 PM. |

| it is called an open fontanal and is a birth defect. usually, if it is the size of the tip of your little finger, it will gradually close up. if it is larger than that, it doesn't usually close and can lead to hydrocephalus which may result in death. You have to be very careful when caring for a puppy with this as any injury to the head can be fatal. if you find an open font in a puppy you have purchased, the breeder should be notified. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! Welcome to Yorkietalk. I see you are from Denver, Colorado - one of my very favorite places!!!! We lived in Parker (just south of Denver for several years and lived in an apartment at 910 Downing Street while our home in Parker was being built). My two sons were born at Rose Medical Center. I LOVE DENVER!!!! About your baby and his "soft spot" - it is called an open fontalle. Generally they go away but not always. You need to protect his little head from injuries - a bump to that area can cause fatal injuries. My little Emmitt has an open fontalle which hasn't quite closed yet - he is 6 months old. Be sure that your vet is aware. |

| My new baby has a soft spot too! My husband purchased my little one from a breeder and did not know to look for this. It is called an open fontanel. Researching it on the internet will scare you to death! The suggestions range from "she has hydrocephaly" to "it will be fine, just watch it and it will probably close as she ages" I have considered returning her to the breeder because all the info says not to breed any yorkies with this defect BUT I have fallen completely in love with her. Please let me know if you find out any new info. and congratulation on your new baby. |

I would have thought that if it was a good breeder, they would want to know about a birth defect (and have a mandatory return to breeder clause), and even with a bad breeder, why would you kill a puppy when you could probably just re-sell it, albeit for a lower price?
