| Elevated kidney enzymes The boys went for their shots last week. Keegan (our 7 yr old) had had a seizure that morning so the vet did blood work on him. When he called on Monday he said that Keegan's kidney enzymes were slightly elevated. He said that I should switch him to a kidney formula. I know the vet has one in stock but after reading some posts here I realize that he may not have the best food for my boy. I'd like to get YTs thoughts on what may be the best brand for Keeg. Another thing, he has been on the same food since he was a pup, which is an Science Diet RD because our 12 yr old Clarance has a tendance to pork up. Anyway, Keegan has always chewed at his paws & toenails & recently he has been itching & chewing at his crotch area...a LOT. I feel so bad for him.....Any thoughts? |

| Can you get a copy of the bloodwork so that you can see/post exactly what's elevated or low? Has your baby ever had a seizure before? Is he a picky eater? Does he have a history of any liver/kidney issues?

| I'll call the vet & get a copy. He has seizures..well rarely. & it seems to happen when he has been stressed (squirrels). This time he was more alert though because he acted afraid...he pressed himself up against me has hard as he could. before he just wanted to be alone. He doesn't get real stiff but he get very shakey & weak (his hind legs seem like jelly). Eating...sometimes he'll get picky. He doesn't want to eat his food but he'll gladly accept 'cookies'. Sometimes he won't eat unless I stand there watch him, sometimes I have to hand feed him, sometimes I have to tell him good boy after every bite....ok so WHO is the alpha dog in our house!!!???? Other than the occasional seizure Keegan is a very healthy littke boy. |

| Switching to a kidney diet when the numbers are only slightly elevated and liver disease hasn't been ruled out might not be a good thing to do. What has the vet said about further testing to make sure your Yorkie needs a kidney diet? Or does the vet just want to use it and skip all testing? If the BUN was up, it could be something as simple as high protein food or dehydration (which I doubt because of the seizures but retesting might be a good idea). If he really does have kidney problems, supplements might help. Could you post the lab results? Can you feed your dogs separately so that he doesn't have to eat R/D? Isn't that very calorie restricted? It is best to give prescription diets only when they are really needed because they might have too little of certain things that are important to healthy pets.

| Please don't feed him R/D or any other Hills prescription diets! They contain BHT, BHA and Ethoxyquin which are toxic chemicals! They can trigger seizures and are also linked to kidney damage. Please read this: Toxicology of BHA http://www.hillspet.com/hillspet/pro...45524441760447 |
