| Are left over bones from human food ok? My bf keeps giving Sasha bones (from ribs, steaks, etc.) on the sly. He knows I don't want her having having them but he just feels like dogs should enjoy a good bone every once in a while (he's never had a dog before Sasha). He always asks me why she can't have it and I say "they're just not good for them." And then he asks me why, but I never have a good answer. Am I just being paranoid? Is it ok for yorkies to chew on our leftover bones or am I correct in thinking it's not good for them? If it's the latter please explain to me why so I can shut him up...lol. Oh we do give her bully sticks and flossies, which she loves, so she's not being deprived of something tasty to chew on. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | The answer is no and yes. NO, they cannot have COOKED bones of any kind - cooked bones become dry and brittle and if consumed, they will splinter and can tear apart your baby's insides. YES, they can have RAW meaty bones - raw bones are softer and pliable and can be chewed by a dog's teeth; the bones are not brittle. A dog has a special tough lining in its stomach & first part of the intestine which is there to prevent any damage from consuming raw bones.

| Ahhh thank you!! I was so paranoid about it, when I first started her on canned food, I threw away the little bones that come in Merrick's Wingaling canned food....lol But then I realized that they were very soft and they could chew them easily and thought why would Merrick put something dangerous in their food anyway??? (silly me) Now is there any type of bone that they shouldn't have altogether, even raw? Or are all raw beef and poultry bones safe? |

| I didn't realize my thread was moved to Health and Diet (though it makes a lot more sense). Thanks for the information and advice everyone. |
