If there's no black stuff on her ears, where do I apply the Lotrimin?

Mine never had thick slimy black stuff like they talk about - but no hair & some dark spots. I just would put a light coat of the lotrimin on or use a q-tip dipped in the tree oil. Which was interesting because even though I couldn't see black stuff, there would be some rubbed off onto the q-tip. So I knew it was there - I think this helped kill the fungus in the skin - that, and the shampoo I mentioned earlier. It takes time for the hair to grow.

Personally, (and I have no scientific knowledge) I think that the fungus must block the pores or hair particles or whatever from growing. Once you get that fungus killed off, then their hair can grow again.

Renata, Brooke had what I thought was winter ear too. I went to the vet and they didn't really know what to do, so I started with the tea tree oil and lotrimin and I saw a little change but not much over a few weeks, so I went to a vet dermatologist and she took a scraping and said it wasn't fungal, it is bacterial. She prescribed Brooke an antibiotic for 1 month and an antibacterial shampoo that I have to use once a week and leave on for 10 minutes. I've just completed the month treatment and her ears are much better, you might have to have a test to determine if it really is fungal.

Nanci, I should have suggested that to means143. I tried to get my vet to do a skin scrapping, but he didn't think it was necessary. If we have the problem again, I'm going to insist he does it.

It's just now that the Vet confirmed my baby has fungus just on the bridge of her nose. The hair on her ears and nose grew sparingly and very slowly for the past 4 months. The vet gave her an antiseptic shampoo. And I was wondering if I could put Tea tree oil on her nose bridge, if she licks it would that be fine?

So glad you got some type of feedback. Did the vet say what fungus? As Leather Ear is suppose to be a fungus.

I finally got my vet to do a skin scrapping on both of mine about 2 1/2 weeks ago - he said it didn't show any problems. He called their problem a yorkie issue - which of course is what they say about leather ear

Tea Tree Oil is toxic. I know I worried about using it for the same reason on the nose. What I have done is just dip a q-tip in the oil - roll the q-tip across the nose and then try to hold my furbaby or interest them in a treat - some distraction to what I have done, so the oil can soak in/dry.
