| How to get rid of winter ear/leather ear HELP! my baby Armani is a year and a half and since his puppy days he has had what they call winter ear/leather ear (I only discovered he had an issue a few months ago) his ears always have a funky smell, sometimes it can get pretty pungent! They have a blackish tint to them as well with minimal hair growth except around the edges and top. The bridge of his nose doesnt have as much hair as other yorkies I have seen which I have also heard is attributed to leather ear. I have also noticed that the amount of hair he has on the bridge of his nose is much less than when he was a puppy! I have researched on the internet and there really isnt much information on the subject or how to get rid of it. I have heard that if left untreated for a long time it can spread to other areas of his body and cause hair loss. I wipe his ears down with a cotton ball and some alcohol as often as I can and I even heard that I should use lotrimin 1% every night on his ears and bridge of his noise. I used the lotrimin for about a week and a half and his ears became reddish and flaky! It looked painful for him so I stopped using it. Now I just rub alcohol on them and clean them out with qtips for the gunk buildup which I have to say is very hard to get rid of! I've even asked the vet about it and asked him to check his ears but they say that the color and hair is fine! I dont believe him because all the other healthy yorkies I have seen dont have the blackish tint on the ears and they have much more hair growth on the bridge of the nose! I wish I could find a vet that specialized on small breeds! I also live in south florida, so I'm wondering if the climate has anything to do with the issue since its generally humid here? |

| what's WINTER EAR? My 4-month old puppy seems to have little hair on her ear and at the bridge of her nose. Her coat grows very slowly and is pretty much limp and not thick or fluffy. I thought it was normal for some puppies then they grow fuller silky coats when they mature.

| I have always heard to use jock itch ointment...I've never had/used it so I am not sure if it works. That is both leather ear and jock itch! LOL

| Thanks for the info. My puppy has little hair on her ears and nose bridge, but there's no black slimy stuff on her ears. Could this be just normal or is it leather ear? See Picture attached. The picture was taken a month ago. And today it seems that the hair on her nose bridge has improved a little. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ictureid=23109

| How do the back of her ears look? My Roxy had almost no hair there and it has taken mths for it to grow back. Both dogs, seemed to be affected on the bridge of their noses - but it too has improved I did try Alex's Yorkie Care Frequently Asked Questions. Page 3. suggestions - consistency was my hardest thing when doing this, especially when I wasn't seeing results What I think made the biggest difference was this shampoo I got from my holistic vet - it is Photoclens by Ayuvet from Tomer Labs - you can buy it directly from them natural herbal treatment - tomer laboratories - natural quality herbal remedies -- this shampoo is wonderful - the dogs smell wonderful & their coats are beautiful. I really lather their ears and noses up good with this shampoo and it needs to sit on them for at least 5 minutes Here is what I found about the ingredients oils of Himalayan cedarwood Himalayan Cedarwood Essential Oil, Aromatherapy Essential Oils, Organic Essential Oils Eucalyptus leaf oil Buy Eucalyptus Oil, Aromatherapy Essential Oils, Organic Essential Oils Also, Eucalyptus is suppose to deter fleas This shampoo made a difference I believe, and also the warm weather - I believe that it is called winter ear for a reason - because it happens during cold weather - but I wonder if your girl has spent a lot of time in air conditioning. This summer we have seen major improvement in Roxy's ears - I rarely run the air conditioner because I live in a big stucco house surrounded by big trees and the house keeps pretty cool, and it hasn't been that horribly hot here this summer. Plus Roxy loves to be outside and has spent a lot of time outside. This winter, I will do a better job of keeping her in sweaters and blankets in her bed. I tend to keep the house cool in the winter because of the price of heating the house - so I'm most concerned about when we aren't at home. And you are right there is not a lot of info anywhere on the Internet - I searched, and searched - and almost everything led me back to Alex's page. Also, my vet hadn't really heard that term -- it truly is a Yorkie condition

| The first picture was when I just got her from the breeder. But I don't think the breeder had airconditioner in the area where her dogs stay. I've had my puppy for a month now and there has been some improvement on the nose as seen in the second picture. And yes, It's been raining here. My question is, if the cold is the culprit, how come it has improved when she stayed with me for a month now in an airconditioned room?

| well, I'm not saying air conditioning is the problem - more I was suggesting it might be - I don't have any personal experience with it. My concern with my 2 is that they are not near any direct cold air vents blowing on them. Yes, I can see the improvement. I would say something is on the right track. Are you feeding a grain free food? My vet says that can help with ear issues. That's the other thing I changed, so maybe it has contributed to the improvement too. It's hard to pinpoint , I guess when I have tried more than one method - but as far as the cold, I know our problem started in the winter, and the major improvement didn't come until this summer (which is also when I changed the food)

| I see thanks for the reply. Yes, I am feeding her grain-free kibble (Nature's Variety Instinct Duck Meal and Turkey Meal). Actually, I didn't realized there was a problem with her before (Leather ear) because I didn't notice any problem on her skin and ear. It's just that I thought her coat grows a bit slower that's why her nose and ears don't have much hair. What can you say about the picture of the back of her ears? Is it really Leather/winter Ear even without black slimy stuff in her ears? What should I do? Now I am concerned

| And now... :( After 1.5 months, my puppy's coat grew a little longer and became thicker except for the hair on her nose bridge. It's very sparse there and I don't even know what the problem is. If it's winter/leather ear, I don't see any black slimy stuff on her ears. Does the black stuff also appear on the nose bridge? Her nose bridge is black with sparse short hair on it. It seems it didn't even grow in the past month Help!

| Well with my experience there was no black goop on my male - just loss of hair, my female had the tiniest amt on her nose - nothing compared to her ears. I did think the tree oil and/or the alternation with Lotrimin - as suggested on Alex's care page - did help. My female still could have a bit more hair grow back on her nose - the funniest thing is she has this one short piece on her nose that stands straight up & in mths, that shaft of hair has not grown at all.
