| tooth brushing and ear cleaning :~? HELP! OK, so my lovely Jaxon is in dire need of getting his teeth cleaned. I have all intentions to brush his teeth daily but all methods I have tried... have failed. I bought a tooth bursh and its too big for his mouth (it was the SMALLEST one they had)... So i tried a bone looking thing that had burshes on both ends. The directions say to just put the toothpaste on it and they should be typically inclined to bite it. Wel jaxon licks all the toothpaste off and then will bite it for about TWO seconds and then go elsewhere. Any suggestions? Also, I need to clean his ears, and have no idea how! I am assuming a Q-tip.. but I dont want to go too far... HELP!!! HELP HELP HELP!!! Thanks |

| I just start using suzy's tartar remover. It is a liquid you add in water. I herd it is really good. |

| I would be interested in hearing people's responses to this too. All my pup will do is keep licking the toothpaste and I can never get to her teeth because of that little but mighty tongue!!!! |

| I brush all of my dog's teeth, usually a couple times a week -- I wish it was daily, but that just doesn't happen. I use the C.E.T. toothpaste which I got from my vet. It tastes like liver and my dogs love it. It also leaves something on the teeth to help prevent bacteria/tarter from growing. Here is what I do: Put the dog on a non-slip surface on the counter (I just use a towel). Put some toothpaste (about 1 inch) on the green "finger" brush. Let them have a small lick of the toothpaste, then lift one side of the upper lip so you can see the large canine tooth. In the beginning, just brush that tooth on each side. As they become more cooperative, move the brush back and forth across the front teeth too. Eventually, pull the mouth open at the farthest side and slide the finger brush down along the back teeth. The more you do this, the more they will trust you to be in their mouth. I have to admit that one of my dogs thought I was trying to kill her when I first tried this. But now is cooperative after about 6 months of working with her. Brushes are all too big for their little mouths, especially when they are not cooperating. I never clean their ears. I do pull the inside hairs out of the ear canal so that the hairs don't trap moisture and give them an ear infection. But that is all I do, and I've never had a problem with their ears in all the time I've owned yorkies. Good luck. A gentle persistent approach and lots of praise should help you get the job done.

Yorkie Yakker | teeth brushing and ear cleaning I'm having alot of difficulty keeping up with my two yorkie's teeth too. They hate having their teeth brushed even though i do it about once a week. I literally have to pry open their mouths and do my best to brush their teeth, which must not be very good because their teeth are getting tartar buildup. I use a regular child toothbrush and some doggy toothpaste i got at petsmart, which is mint (and they like the taste of it). I'm just going to have to end up getting the vet to do a teeth cleaning on both, although i hate the idea of having them get put out to clean their teeth. As for ear cleaning, i got this ear cleaning solution from the vet called Epiotic, and the vet shows you how to squirt a small amount into each ear and massage the ears for about a minute to let it clean the inside, then when the dog shakes its head the excess solution comes out. I do this for them about every two weeks or when their ears start to smell funky, its really easy and i just do it right after their bath. |

| Teeth Cleaning We have 5 yorkies and 3 of them have had problems with their teeth that require regular teeth cleanings at the vet. It is very expensive and it is scary to have them put under to do it. I try to brush their teeth at least once a week and know I should do it more often. I use a small square of gauze with a little CET toothpaste I get from the vet when I do this. They like the poultry flavor but just tolerate me scrubbing the teeth with the gauze. On the positive side I have had good luck using PetzLife. It comes in a spray or a gel. Mine don't like the spray. All you have to do is put a dab on their lips and they lick it and spread it around in the mouth. I do this every night on all of them. It may not completely eliminate the need for the vet dental cleaning but it does make the cleanings come less often and they lose less teeth. My three year old has not had to have a dental at the vet yet and I have used this with her since she was a puppy. I think that is what made the difference with her. The three with the problems were older when I started the Petzlife. My three year old is not related and that also could be a factor. It is too early to tell if it is going to work as well on our 8 month old but looks very promising. My vet recently recommended a product called Leba III. I bought a bottle and it only comes as a spray. I am only successful in getting the spray on our male. (one of the older ones). So far it hasn't removed existing tarter but it is working about the same as the PetzLife. I would recommend you start with the PetzLife and see how it goes. Hope this helps.

| tooth brushing and ear cleaning My dog also has refused to have her teeth cleaned since she was a puppy. Just in the past 6 months I have given her these bull sticks from the petstore to chew on and they have made such a difference in cleaning the teeth. She chews on them and they get a bit stringie which is like flossing their teeth and she loves the taste. That is the only thing that has helped as she will not let me near her teeth. I have seend her teeth become much whiter and quickly. Works for us! Also for ears I uses Johnson's and Johnson's Q-tips and any kind of dog ear drops. I put some on the Q-tip just to dampen and I clean her ears. You don't go too far in but you will see stuff on the Q-tip and then with the dry end clean again. Good luck LindaC |
