| Ear infections linked to food? Bruise got an ear infection, so I took him into the vet. She said that it might have something to do with his food. About a month ago I started incorporating his new adult food into his puppy food. She was saying that sometimes the chicken in the food can cause it? What food do you feed to your yorkie? Thank you! | Food allergies can definitely be a culprit. What other ingredients are in his food? If there is corn or other grain, I would suspect that also. Marcerella02 just posted a great link a couple days ago regarding dog food analysis. I'd highly recommend you read it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I just wanted to add that it's really important to keep all water out of the ears when shampooing, even a tiny bit of water can lead to infection. Some people suggest placing cotton balls in each ear, and folding earflaps down when rinsing. Yorkies aren't as prone to ear infections as some breeds such as the Maltese because ears that stand dry faster. Not saying that this is the problem, but just thought you might like to know. I though chicken was relatively safe, but I have heard that many dogs have allergies to corn.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, I agree with your vet. What were you trying to transition to and what was the puppy food? You'd probably want to make the decisions on where to go next based upon some of the ingredients in those foods.

| More than likely the change in food was a factor of the ear infection, but not the direct result. If there was some new ingredient that your little one was introduced to when you swapped food, that could certainly trigger some dormant allergies that could cause itching--which for dogs more commonly comes with biting at the paws and scratchign the ears. The excessive ear scratching can easily open up the door for an ear infection. Also, to help further prevent them, make sure you are cleaning the ears regularly, making sure that after baths there is no water left in the ears and making sure that you are keeping the hair growing inside the ear plucked. |
