More than likely the change in food was a factor of the ear infection, but not the direct result. If there was some new ingredient that your little one was introduced to when you swapped food, that could certainly trigger some dormant allergies that could cause itching--which for dogs more commonly comes with biting at the paws and scratchign the ears. The excessive ear scratching can easily open up the door for an ear infection.
Also, to help further prevent them, make sure you are cleaning the ears regularly, making sure that after baths there is no water left in the ears and making sure that you are keeping the hair growing inside the ear plucked.
