Liver Problem!

I just had a BAT done on Misa. Her pre-level was 9.3 and her post level was 29.8. Her ammonia level was 0, her BUN was 9 Creatinine 0.7, glucose 119, TBIL 0.6 CALCIUM 9.5, ALT 38, ALKP 100, ALBUMIN 3.8,CL 110,K 3.8, AMYL 740,PHOS 2.3. Misa has had two episodes of seizure activity, once this past may and the last 9/9. The first time it was thought that she had a pyrethrin toxicity and she was treated with Robaxin and it helped her. This second time, she again was treated with Robaxin and it helped her. I found out that my lawn people were spraying Suspend, whichis a synthetic pyrethroid on the pation and in the tracks where the sliding glass doors are. Misa likes to lick her feet. She has a great appetite, isn't listless, weighs a healthy 5.7 pounds and is 4 years old. Does this sound like liver shunt to anyone?

He had an ultra sound done today and they did not see any obvious shunts (although I am told it does not rule it out) but his liver is inflamed and the vasculars are are small. My dog is 7 months old and he has a liver issue also I am awaiting a BAT that was drawn today. He had one drawn in June that was 13.4 pre, and 95.3 post.But he had a severe intestinal infection at the time so after healing and he showed no more signs, we had dismissed the first results and we were awaiting till he was 6-7 months old and had not received any vaccines to influence the results. Well he started walking in circles and holding his head down and it was horrible. His ammonia level was 414 normal is 0-99. They put him on lactulose and Amoxicillin and now possibley neomyacin. I have denosyl and I was thinking of getting milk thistle. We discovered today he has juvenile diabetes, his fasting blood test today was 446. Even if the surgery could be done for an external shunt, the diabetes would cause him to have a horrid time of it trying to regulate his sugars.

The tests seem to point to microvascular dysplasia as opposed to a liver shunt. I have also had a urinalysis done to check for stones and everything came back negative.

I want to have Bruno neutered because he has really been acting out in the past month, marking his territory, becoming more aggressive, etc. I would also like to bring him to doggy daycare some times so he can play with other dogs however they do not allow dogs who are not spayed/neutered. The vet seems to think the risk is low and it is okay to have him neutered. However there is a risk since he has a compromised liver. She is planning on using gas instead of an injectable which is less stress on his system and will wear off quicker. I am still terrified that something will happen. I think having him neutered however will be very beneficial however not at the cost of his life. I am so torn right. Does anyone have any advice???

Ahhh....I know the worry, but you have to try and do everything else possible to ensure he will have a happy and healthy life, which IMO is being neutered.

Roxy was spayed, she had a teeth cleaning, she had bi-lateral LP surgery, then she had a second LP surgery, then she had to have a pin removed that migrated from the LP surgery.....THEN....we found out she has liver issues MVD.

So she went 'under' all those times and I didn't even know she has MVD. Just last month she had to have major dental, but we are aware of the MVD and took precautions.

A dog can have surgery with liver issues without an extreme amount of risk. Ellie has high bile acids and was spayed. Yorkieluv's dog was neutered and has serious liver issues. If the vet uses Isoflurane and doesn't give NSAIDS for pain relief, it should be okay. Is he having symptoms?

Yep

Miko was neutered and had surgery for stone removal after being diagnosed with liver problems. Use Isoflourane and no injectables...Be very, very careful with pain meds...Those could cause more problems. Miko had a severe reaction to rimadyl which he was given after a surgery once.

If your baby is not already on milk thistle, now is a good time to start so that you can protect his liver from any damage the anesthesia may cause and to help detoxify...
You should be giving maximum liver support, especially now if he will be having surgery. If you give lactulose, you will need to increase the dosages after surgery so that your baby has a bowel movement and does not become constipated and backed up with toxins...
