YT 1000 Club Member | Found a flea I'd noticed Roxie scratching more then usual lately. I kept checking her for fleas or flea dirt and wasn't seeing anything. So yesterday morning I gave her a bath and after that the scratching was more intense. I found one dead flea while bathing her. I checked her again thinking it's got to be fleas as I felt some little bumps around her neck which I thought might be bites of some sort. This morning I spotted a live one crawling on her. We're about 5 days shy of it being time to apply another round of Advantyx. I went ahead and put the flea stuff on her figuring that since she's had 3 baths since the last treatment it's probably wore off. I'm just wondering if applying another dose 5 days short of the month being up was ok? Any thoughts? |

What I've learned in few months is even though the products swear they work - I'm not too sure how true that is ....& holy cr*p - paying 100 bucks a pop for treatment SUCKS. I can't get over how expensive it is to combat fleas. My girls have never had them but when I moved into an apartment - we are now officially battling them too. It seems they're really bad this year - The bites are a sure sign and the scratching is too - you don't have to actually see the 'flea dirt' (I never did) and only saw ONE flea also - but where there's one - there's always more. Did I mention it sucks ? Good luck. | |

| Fleas are the WORST. My cats got them while we were living in a 2nd floor apartment (and my cats never go outside). And this was right after we had a bird mite infestation from a bird nest that was in our windowsill I know it seems like you will NEVER get rid of them but if you keep up with the flea treatments for the pets they will eventually starve and die off. Also it is important to vacuum A LOT and empty the vacuum every time you do and take it outside to the trash (this helps get rid of fleas, eggs and larvae in the carpet). We also got a flea-killing spray for the carpet & furniture, you may try that. |

When I first got Tricksie, she was outside 5 min. and got fleas, the Vet put her on Comfortis, a pill, she had two pills, she has never had another flea, BUT, I don't take her in the yard, she has plenty of room to run around a large home, and screened pool area, a big screened front porch. Fleas in FL are horrible. Has not had a flea in 6 months and does not take the pill anymore. I don't like chemicals and pills. Good Luck

| Also, the flea medication could be expired, did you check it?

YT 1000 Club Member | Flea stuff isn't expired as I just bought it last month when I applied the first dose for the season. I'm just going to call my vet and ask to make sure. I'll let you all know what the verdict is. I live in an area where the fleas are pretty bad. The river is in my back yard with alot of foilage in which there are alot of squirrels and raccoons and who knows what else. Plus the mosquito's are bad here due to the amounts of rain we've had this year. I really don't think it safe for her to be unprotected and being bitten by so many insects. Thank you for the replies I'll keep you posted! Last edited by roxies_mom; 08-02-2008 at 11:04 AM. |

| Ugh, fleas are horrible... especially in this part of the woods. I just got my Yorkie pup last night from some friends of ours and she had 13 fleas on her! I am still itching all over from the thought of it. I am headed out to buy some treatments for the carpets and maybe even a flea collar... I hate bugs of any type... and I especially hate fleas. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I've officially beat the flea problem - but I'll tell you - it cost over $200 to do. I only saw ONE Adult (dead) FLEA but knew from reading that both my girls scratching was a sign of more - then 1 month into treatment - I did see a baby crawling on Chanel again. Fleas make me CRAZY so i ordered CAPSTAR pills - you can get them from 1800PETMEDS but - they kill ADULT Biting fleas only - it works in hours and lasts for only 24 hours - I haven't used any yet but if your dog is getting chewed up by fleas it's worth it to buy. also - do the Dawn Dish Soap bath to kill fleas instantly - it's so much safer than using a flea shampoo and like everyone says - vacuum ALOT - and treat all bedding - sheets - areas they lay in etc. and you can beat it too. This is the 1st week in 2 months that I can tell my girls are flea free. |
