| Portia in heat for the 1st Time! Yesterday evening I noticed that my 9 month old yorkie suddenly went into heat. She was constantly licking herself and she is very swollen down there. Is this normal? What do most YT owners do when they go in heat? Is it best to use those "doggie diapers" or just kind of let it come out naturally. I have not noticed any odd behavioral changes although she has been barkling a bit more excessivley. She is also sleeping more than normal. Is this all due to being in heat? All advice is welcomed! |

| I don't know, but I'd like to see what the answers are myself! My lil Bella is only 4 months old, but the whole 'heat' thing is new to me too! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Roxie went into heat the beginning of June 3 days before her scheduled spay. She was 8 months old. I had a feeling she was getting ready as she was sleeping more, wanting to be by herself more and liscking herself. She had so little bleeding that I did nothing but wipe her gently with a tissue a few times a day. I never saw any blood anywhere. SHe did go into a false pregnancy after her heat and is just coming out of that. Once she is done I am getting her spayed.

| Yes its normal. The licking and sleeping a bit more (for Meka anyway). You might even see her "hump" something and that too is normal. It can last anywhere from 2-3 wks. I'll only put a diaper on her if we are going somewhere or if it seems like shes spotting a lot, other than that I let her clean herself and do her thing... I also try to keep a lil diary of those things. Good luck

| Here is my question: My Pantera has nt had a visible first heat unless this is it and she turned a year old in June 2008. When they come in heat or are coming in heat, do they leave a blood spot in their urine occassionally on the pee pad? I have had females in heat before but they have always been bigger dogs and they never used pee pads so I wouldn't know about this. They were very easy to tell they were in season as well. Pantera doesn't seem that much different other than she is moody and a Mamma's girl which she occassionally gets anyway. I followed her for 6 hours to get a urine sample to take to the Vet and the Vet basically sent me back home with it saying it looked clear and they didn't want to waste my money because if she is coming in heat it will throw a false positive for infection when she doesn't really have one due to the blood all coming out of the same area. I am at a loss. I keep wiping her and I get nothing. In her pants, which she loathes I might add, we get nothing. She is an extremely clean dog and the one heat that I think I missed I can only tell because I can't seem to wash this stain out of my white bed comforter and it has to be from her. She is the only female equipped in the house for such a stain |
