| Lyme Disease vaccine/ revolution Hi all - I have a two-part question... My last visit to vet was interesting to say the least. I thought it was a routine check up to see how her ears were doing - before I knew it, she had the syringe for the Lyme vaccine! I wasn't asked if it was something I wanted to give her - seemed to be an assumption on the vet's part. Next, after I had mentioned that Maggie has been uncomfortably itchy each morning for the last month or so she did a test for mites - none present but gave her a dose of Revolution just in case... I left the office scratching my head and wondering what the heck just happened? Has anyone else tried Revolution? Did it work? Has anyone else gone through with the Lyme vaccine? I know it's a real issue in MA but is it necessary? Thanks!!!

| Lyme's vaccine is not usually recommended. It may be necessary in a couple of areas of the country but very few. There are posts on YT about it and one by "Kris Christine' quoting Dr. Ron Schultz (an immunologist) about this. That would be worth reading. Here is a site with side effects: Lyme Disease - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! While some vets do push the vaccine, it it non-core and there needs to be a GOOD reason to give it, especially since people are trying to link the vaccine to possible kidney problems and sometimes even symptoms that make it look like they have Lyme's Disease. As for extreme itching, sometimes a skin scraping doesn't show anything and the dog is treated anyway. Is Maggie still itchy? Did she have a second dose two weeks later? What are you feeding?

| The itching started about a month ago and can't figure out why. Do you think dust mites bother the dogs? Anyway - so the itching started and at first I thought it was dry skin because I was dipping her in the tub a couple times a day during a bad heatwave we were having at the time. She's on Frontline for fleas but I've never seen one on her or in the house so that's not it. As far as her diet: boiled chicken, rice, Wellness dry food, sweet potato puree...vanilla yogurt, applesauce, Veggie treats (Apple and Chicken) from Whole Foods.....and the occasional Utz potato chip I've read a few other threads where their Yorkies are simply itchy - no diagnosis, just itchy. I just feel so bad for her - this morning she was crazy about it and she eventually coughs a bit because she's really biting and (i think) restricting her breathing while doing so! I want to help her!! She had the first dose of Revolution on Monday and I'm supposed to give the second on the 28th.

| find a new vet ASAP My vet says NO Lyme vaccine and NO lepto vaccine for any dog under 15 lbs. He says anyone whose lifestyle puts a dog at significant risk of contracting either of those diseases needs a larger breed dog and should NOT have a Yorkie. I don't know about revolution or frontline or those types of things and would not use them on my dogs. You should be able to tell if your dog has earmites by any dark material in the ear, and there are ways to treat that without poisoning the dog. Cleaning the ears with olive oil works great. The itching could be due to something dietary. Last edited by belindaY; 07-17-2008 at 07:21 AM. |

| I don't think itching just happens out of nowhere (even if the vet can't find a reason). The can have environmental allergies, food alllergies, yeast problems, demodectic or sarcoptic mites, fleas or an underlying medical problem like liver disease. What parts of her body is she scratching? Ears? Sides? Out of those foods you listed, did one recently get added to her diet?

| Out of the foods I feed her - either I've been feeding all along or started in the last week or so (veggie treats). She did have wax build up in her ears and they tested it for ear mites but that was negative...on 6/28 the vet said she a bit of yeast in her left ear and gave her otomax and chlorohexiderm which I stopped using quickly because her ears were SO red and raw. She said that yeast cleared up in the last visit (Monday) - do you think the yeast spread or something? She itches/bites her legs and tummy and around her tail...I did notice a couple days ago, just around her nose the skin is flaking - doesn't seem to bother her though because she doesn't scratch or play with that area unless she's just eaten and has food in her fur... Oh I am so at a loss!

| It could be mites but if she is no better after the first round of Revolution, that doesn't seem as likely. It could be yeast and the ears I guess could just be an overflow of what is going on in her body. Have you talked to the vet about treating for a systemic yeast infection? Of course those drugs aren't great and could make the problem worse in the long run.

| Okay - so the first dose of revolution was Monday and this morning was awful for her...do you think it's not working? Have you heard of introducing Apple Cider Vinegar in the diet to help with the yeast? If it is in fact the systemic yeast infection (pray it isn't!!), I would rather fix this issue naturally or holistically - no more damn antibiotics! The poor thing has been on medicine for Coccidia then Giardia (which by the way was misdiagnosed but medicine was given anyway), then the yeast in the ears, not to mention all the freakin' vaccines.
