| Car Sickness My 6 month old yorkie has started getting car sick. he didn't used to but all of a sudden it has become a huge issue. we used to take him everywhere and there were no problems. Now it is awful. we don't feed and water him or anything before hand and have tried crateing vs. holding him. Nothing works. Can we give him dramamine or something? I have to take him to the vet and it is a 40 min ride which I am dreading. even a short ride say 12 min and he is sick within 5 min. Any and all suggestions Please Hugss Cher |

| I know you said you didn't feed or water him before you go, but it should be at least two hours before. I didn't know if you were aware of that. Actually, it should pass if he goes on regular car rides. I wouldn't give him anything before going to the vet without asking the vet first. Good luck.

| Do you have a car seat? The one the link goes to sits on the console so your baby is nice and close to you, which is comforting. Console Look Out Car Dog Seat |

| Transport him in a plastic sided crate, which will obstruct his view and may help with the "motion" sickness. I also suggest desensitizing him to the car. 1. Take him to the car with the door open. 2. Allow him to sit in the car, door open and give him a treat. 3. If he's panting heavily, or showing distress, take him out of the car. 4. Let him stand/sit/down next to the car and treat for calm behavior. 5. Once you can have him sitting in the car with the door open, try sitting in the back seat with him and closing the door (windows open.) 6. If he responds well, give him a treat. 7. Next, have him sit in the back seat while you get into the driver's seat. Praise him for calm behavior. 8. Start the car, and sit in the car with him for 5 minutes. If he is calm, try sitting in the car for 10 minutes with it running and the a/c on if it's hot. 9. If he is still calm, back the car out of the driveway, then pull back in and park. Turn off the car and take him out. 10. Repeat the process until you can take longer and longer drives with a calm dog. This sounds time consuming, and it is, but if you want to avoid meds and car sickness, then this is what you need to do. Good luck! |
