Default My pup wont eat :( :( :(

Man I am having this same problem!! (just read in another thread)

I, like most other people on the board, have tried nearly everything. Here's a synopsis:

First off, she hasn't consistantly lived with me, bc shortly after we received her, I found out I was expecting myself, and the morning sickness took me OVER, so she stayed w grandma for a few weeks 'til I recovered.

All of a sudden when she comes back, she loves me! so I know it's not separation anxiety (will follow me all around the house), but she will not eat (consistently).

First the breeder has us giving her organic food, which we softened with warm water. She ate this for a few weeks 'til we ran out once, and preparing for her arrival I had Plan Pro already in the house, so until the next shipment of the organic food came, I gave her the plan pro kibbles.

She ate this! Wouldn't go back to organic so we kept her there.
Now fast forward to spending time with grandma.

She returns, and won't eat nearly anything. We've come to the conclusion that someone there has been giving her table food, b/c whenever I eat, she'll run RIGHT to me for some of whatever I have.

I tried a little canned food. She ate one brand all up the first time. 2nd go round, didn't touch it.

Next brand, she ate it SO fast i thought I finally had a winner, but returned to her vomit all over the carpet. Needless to say she won't touch that brand anymore.

Now I alternate between can and kibble, but it's like she'll barely touch either. Would much rather whatever I'm eating and my brain says NO but my heart has given her chicken, fries, sweet cereal (like fruity pebbles), saltines and bread! ((so ashamed)). I just don't want her starving!

Please someone help. Everyone I know is saying "just leave the food down, she won't starve herself!" But she'll go to bed w me w.o touching it so I'm guessing she will

I love my lil girl... but being my first dog.. I'm so clueless!
She's 7 months now and about 2.5 lbs.

welcome to YT.

Well all people food is not bad for her. Perhaps you could mix some cooked chicken wirh her kibble. If you look at the tip of this forum there is a sticky thread with s lot of good info about home cooking

Hi and welcome! I have a little one too and he is also a picky eater. I have come to find that the size of the kibble makes a huge difference and also the protein source. He does MUCH better on a small bites type of kibble with a protein source other than chicken, his favorite seems to be Lamb. After countless hours of research and many pet food trial packs we finally found a food that he seems to like and that I am happy with nutritionally. He has been eating Nature's Variety Prairie Lamb and Rice formula and is a much better eater (more interested in food and also consistent) than he has ever been.
Good luck in your search.

Also wanted to say that alot of the members on here have great success with home cooking and with raw diets as well. My picky puss even turned his nose at my cooking after a few weeks...which my husband now finds the need to tell everyone we know.

The one I can think of off the top of my head is named Wiley's Mom and she is extremely knowledgable about nutrition and raw food diets. She has given me some great advice and she is super nice.

If you search for her posts you will find lots of info about food and other stuff.

Feeding human food is great for them but feeding leftover scraps is not.
I homecook for Ellie and she LOVES it.
You could feed her boiled white meat chicken with no seasonings, apple bits (no skin), melon, squash, carrot, sweet potato, potato, berries, lettuce, rice, banana... If you homecook, you will have to use supplements though. If you just want to mix a small amount into her kibble you would avoid the need to supplement and she might eat it if you find a food she really likes.

Dogs won't starve themselves if you leave food down but my opinion is that my dog should like what she is eating. As long as I can get something healthy into her (no problem for me thankfully), she should get what she likes within reason. Also with Yorkies you have to be careful because at least one Yorkie I know of held off on eating and threw up bile and it would be so easy for your pup to go into hypoglycemia this way.

My Yorkie Like's To Eat Vienna Sausages, I Give It To Him When He Won't Eat His Food. Maybe You Can Try To Give It To Him To See If He Will Eat Then.

I feed both my pickey poochies Natures Variety raw. It should have been my first choice, but stupid me, it was my last. I went through every grain free kibble out there, and good canned. I was almost about to home cook, then I tried the raw. (I don't cook much for my husband and me) They both love it. I have to rotate the meats around, because they get bored with one taste all the time. I rotate venison, lamb, and beef. It comes in organic chicken, but my boys don't care for it. They also want a little kibble every now and then, and it's grain free. As far as the skin allergies go, venison and lamb suit them the best. It helps hold down the itching and constant scratching. And yes, Wylie'smom is the greatest. She helped me to get my babies straightened out. Good luck.

My Suzi is a good sized pup and she even gets tired of eating the same food! Boiled chicken and rice is good to give them, and you could try mixing the chiken, n o skin, with her canned food. I hope the Kibble comes in soon for her. Cottage cheese, and a little cheese can be given in small amounts.

Wow I love this board already. Thanks so much for all your responses.

Today, no eating. not even the cereal (that she ate yesterday). I had an empenada (Spanish chicken patty) and she hounded me down so i gave her some of the chicken out of that. It saddens me so much that she does this.

Cooking would be fine IFFFFF I was a cook! I don't cook at all really, so I guess that's y it's been harder.

How about a vitamin or something I can give her?

Nature's Variety Raw also sounds good.. I think she just prefers our food over hers.

ok, don't do table food (ie your food) -- as someone else said, if she is healthy, she won't starve herself. She has learned to beg - not a behavior you want to reinforce. You'll have to be the mean mom and stand your ground and find something she will eat. You could try adding a spoonful of plain yogurt or cottage cheese to her food to get her interested.

LOL I know what you mean. My izzy is so picky and hardly eats. At first she ate ok. She would eat consistantly. Now she barely touches her food. I put cottage cheese in her breakfast and she will eat that. Dry kibble and cottage cheese, and I even tried giving her a lot of that to make up for the times she wont eat throughout the day but..NOPE...She will only eat as much as she wants and then thats it...usually its only half. Anyways I leave food out for her. Sometimes I put a little water in it to moisten it but most times I try to mix it. Dry and wet. I want her to eat the dry kibble so that it will help her teeth some. Anyways I am one of those people who does not want to ever ever start feeding her table food or special types of food. I want her to only like and be use to her food because I know that there are times when I wouldnt be about to get her special food...or whatever. So...Im still working with her. She will eat eventually most times...she will only eat breakfast and then late at night or she may eat some of her food.
I was a little worried that she was going to get hypoglycemic and had started putting karo in her water a lot but I didnt thing that was too good for her either so...now I just give it to her when she seems to need it.
Anyways...Omg I even thought that if I let her get tons of exersize she would be starving and come in and eat but nope.
And you know I think that she stopped eating as great because I changed her routine. I use to get her up around 6am and take her out and then feed her downstairs. Now I take her out around 8am, and feed her afterwards upstairs. Hmmm...
I dunno. Picky dogs...weird to me...Im a new doggy owner too.

Confused

I even read somewhere that some people only put the food out at certain times. And not have it available at all times. THen they will be excited to see food and eat eat eat. But...I tried that one day and it didnt work too well. They said if pup doesnt eat after a few minutes remove the food because their not interested in it. So....I dunno. I guess everyone usually tries different techniques.
My izzy is loosing weight though. She only ate a little as it is and now she eats even less she is more interested in eating everything wierd she can find outside than her food

My lil Romeo is picky too! I've tried various types of foods too. he won't eat the raw diet, so thats still in my freezer, just taking up space!
I've recently tried Life's Abundance, with the recommendation from YT's own Linda of fufufashions, and he's been eating that. The kibble pieces are a little big for him, so I cut them in 3-4 pieces, which is a lot of work, but anything for my baby It also came with a daily supplement, which has a lot of the vitamins/minerals they need. I usually give him half a tablet a day. I also boil chicken and rice for him in case he decides to not eat the dry food.
Sometimes give him fruits/salads chopped up. He's take that down especially if thats whats I'm eating it! I've noticed even if his food is more delicious than mine, he still wants what I'm having! Sometimes I act like I'm eating his kibble, and he starts eating it! But I think he's catching on to that
Keep us updated! Good luck to you. Just remember to be patient and what works for one yorkie mommie may not work for the you! Keep trying! I like the cottage cheese/yogurt idea too and may try that soon.
