Default 1 Year Vet Exam

Hi everyone - I need some advice.

In about three weeks, Louis my furboy is scheduled for his one year exam. My vet and I practice limited vaccines, so he will only get rabies, since its required by law.

I will be bringing a stool sample for a fecal float and having a heartworm blood test.

With the exception of colitis and some ear infections when we first got him, he hasn't been to the vet since last August. Both health issues were fixed with a holistic diet and supplements.

Is there anything I should be aware of or ask about on this visit? Is there anything special that should happen at a one year exam??

Thanks for your help!

Hmmm...you could do a yearly blood panel (optional), dental check (visual), palpate the abdomen, listen to heart/lungs, check knees, look into eyes w/ the light "thingy", look into ears. Some people even do yearly organ screens - but I don't think I'll do those unless I think something is wrong or until they're seniors.

I can't think of anything else right off the top of my head....

While Ellie doesn't get vaccinated annually either, I do think it is necessary to make sure they get at least one round of distemper and parvo after 6 months (when the immune system is mature). This is usually just given at one year but anytime after 6 months should be fine. Then you could decide later what schedule you want (as in every 3 years, every 5 years, none at all, titers every year...).

I'll defineitly add that to my list of questions! My vet practices ltd. vaccines, so I trust that he will do whatever is necessary!

Thanks ! I totally appreciate it! After I scheduled his exam - all of a sudden it hit me - I am still a new pet owner and my furkids and I are still going through our 'firsts' even though Louis is over a year old.

This Sunday, its our one year anniversary since he came to live with us. *Sigh* Time goes so fast. He was just a little four pound hairball with giant paws one year ago!

Every time I take my dogs in for a "check-up" Dr. Amy gives them a thorough examination - heart, knees, palpates abdomen, lookes at tooties and noodles, skin condition, ears, eyes, teeth, throat. When that is done she ALWAYS checks their toe nails. It is a standing joke between us. I clip their toenails, but if she finds one that needs to be trimmed, she "scolds" me with a sweet look and gets out her clippers. She finishes each exam with plenty of puppy kisses. While the puppy kissing is going on we discuss any questions I might have.

As far as the vaccines go, they are going to a two year schedule on dogs that are vaccinated regularly , except for rabies which is annual. They do an annual heart worm check (we dont' use heart worm meds in the winter). She also recommends that they have a full blood panel on file for comparison later on.

Good luck with Louis's vet visit! I hope he gets an A++!

THANKS!! Me too. Louis is a Cavalier, so I think I am going to request a cardiogram b/c Cavaliers are prone to early onset Mitral Valve Disease. Luckily, both his parents are heart clear at ages 5 and 7, so we have a good shot of avoiding Heart disease until he is an old man.

You are so wise to have the cardiogram on Louis. We have Boo the Boxer who has Boxer Cardiomyopathy. It is so common in Boxers that the condition was named for them. Basically it is an electrical conduction disorder that causes the heart to beat erratically. I was completely unaware of the condition until her first episode at age 10. She just flopped over - it looked similar to a seizure, but it wasn't. After a couple of minutes she got up and acted like nothing was wrong. A trip to the vet and an ultra sound plus cardiogram diagnosised the problem. The Dr, Amy told us that Boo would probably be with us for 3 to six months - with proper care and her meds. That was last spring and Boo is still going strong. We cherish every day with her. Sorry if this was long and rather off topic.

I am so sorry about Boo! I knew about MVD when I was looking for a Cavalier so I interviewed so many breeders to see who tested hearts and had older, heart clear parents. There is something like 80% of all Cavaliers will have at least a grade one heart murmur by age 7. Its such a shame that there are all these genetic defects in purebred dogs. I imagine that the AKC is going to have to start allowing controlled breeding into purebreds to widen the gene pool and preserve purebreds - otherwise we won't have them around much longer....Louis doesn't show any heart murmur symptoms, but since I know this about the breed, there is no reason not to test yearly.

My breeder recommended taking Louis to a veterinary cardiologist at age 2 and yearly thereafter to be safe.

I am pretty wary of Lepto - I think I'll do titers for it before I re-vaccinate.
