| Please respond- puppy just had first shot! I just returned from the vet. My puppy is 10 weeks old and we had our first shot today. Since my puppy has been infected with kennel cough and is not entirely recovered yet the vet wanted to take a precaution and give Mickiey half the dosage. The shot was a combination of Hepatitis, parvo, coronavirus, and distemper. Our vet told us to return in 3 weeks to get the second shot. Did anybody do this combination as a first shot as well? was this a good approach for the shot (the combination)? I am not sure if we did the right thing. Mickiey is 2.4 Ibs now and ever since we got back from the vet he has not been himself. Usually Mickiey is very playful, but he's been sleeping the entire time and he is not even around me like he usually is (he is sleeping in another room) =[ I don't know if I should be worried or if this is common for small puppies after a vaccine. By the way he also had a blood test done today. If you guys have any opinions on this, or if anybody has gone through the same thing, please let me know. I am new to this, so anything that you guys say will be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance |

| Brooklyn's first shots were the worst for her. She also was not herself for the first day. She was in a lot of pain in her shoulder and hip (that is where they gave her the shots), but the next day she was fine. Im sure your little pup will feel better tomorrow. Just keep an eye for any vomiting or diareah or things like that.

| awww.. been there. Layla had a HORRIBLE reaction to her first set of vaccines.. she got very lethargic and ran a fever. looking back she should have to immediately to the ER vet... if his gums get red or white, if his eyes look glassy and "out there" and if he has no energy. call the ER vet. the combo seemed fine to me... make sure you insist on him NOT getting the Lepto vaccine.. that is what Layla had her reaction to and it is not recommended for dogs under 10 lb.. let alone 2 and a half! Keep him hydrated. layla's reaction lasted about 2 days of her being.. not hersefl... also if you notice a lump where the shot went in, that is normal. use a warm compress to help it go down. |

| I can tell you my experience. When AprilLove was a puppy, her first time with vaccine, she was a little tired for a few hours, but the vet also told me that if there were going to be a reaction to the vaccine, I would see it in a very short time. (like by 30 minutes) He also said it was normal for them to act this way. But still it is important to keep an eye on them for any changes after awhile. I would keep him in the same room with you and just watch him carefully, also is he drinking or eating? If anything does change you should call your vet to be sure.

| thank you guys for responding. I woke him up and put him next to me. He seems still sleepy but he refuses to eat or drink. I'll leave him alone for a few more hours but if he doesn't eat then either I will feed him to make sure he is getting his nutrients. I have another question, the vet told me that I will be able to take Mickiey outside only after the 3rd set of vaccines. he told me that the second set should be in three weeks, but does anybody know in how long the third set should be? Thanks again for the attention and your replies! |

| Madison got the combo shot too....minus the coronavirus, but he got Bordatella too. He's 2 yrs old and almost 7 lbs though and he was pretty under the weather I'd say for a few days. He was ok basically- I don't want to scare you~ he'd jump up if he heard something, jump up when he woke up and it was time to eat, run around with Max in the back, but I could just tell he didn't feel his usual zippy self. He ate fine and eliminated fine, no vomiting or anything else, so I wasn't too worried. I just watched him really closely. He got his Rabies shot two weeks later and had absolutely NO problem with it at all. And then the next week (this last Thurs) he got his booster shots, and he was a little tired that night, but pretty much back to himself the next day. I'm glad it's over with for now. He has to get his rabies in a year b/c we weren't sure if he'd ever had it before so they wouldn't give him the 3 yr.

| The puppy shots are typically given every three weeks. Sometimes they will be as little tired afterwards. I am glad your vet gave him half the doseage. My litte Suzi had shots from the breeder before I got her. She only needed her last round of shots. However, the breeder gave her first round of shots too early. So she needs one more round of shots. Then after the puppy reaches at least 4 months of age he/she recieves a rabies shot. My vet also recommended me not to take Suzi out untill all of her shots were over. In some areas these diseases are worse and more prevalient in dogs. There are a few shots that are only necessary if it is a problem in your area. Such as the Lepto, which is a very potent vasccine. |

| Thanks again for replying, I'm beginning to worry much less since Mickiey seems much better now and has some of the similar symptoms most of your doggies had. Nvnvgirl- I'm glad that your puppy dealt with the shots well! Mscat- I'm sorry that your breeder gave your puppy the shots too early. I've actually read of many other people being not satisfied with their breeders for the same reason as you. Unfortunately for me, my breeder didn't give Mickiey any shots and didn't even take him to the vet to get checked. Thank you for informing me about the vaccines, I'm glad to know that we did the right thing with the small dosage of the vaccine and I did need to know when I should be expecting the third round. Thanks!! |

| I checked his gums, they are of a pinkish color which I think is normal. I am giving him nutrical every 6 hours and I fed him with a spoon not too long ago so he actually ate. Thanks for your concern!!! I really have to say that this site is amazing. I have never had such a tiny dog, I've had two German Shepards in the past which is totally different. You guys really help me a lot in keeping Mickiey happy and healthy! Thanks! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Glad he seems a bit better. Cali had a reaction to her first shots she got when I got her, she screamed if I tried to pick her up and slept all day in her crate, ddin't want to be with us. By the next day she was back to normal.
