| Heartworm Dosing Venting I was just reading this: Interceptor-HW prevention-dose advice http://onibasu.com/archives/kn/145292.html NADA 140-886 I am not happy. So Interceptor is 5 times more powerful than it needs to be just so they can say it kills intestinal worms. I would like to use the safeheart dose but the smallest that comes in is what Ellie is on now. So I thought I would stick with Heartgard (not Heartgard Plus). Now I see that this is at least three times more drugs than she needs EVERY MONTH!!! Do you think it would be a bad idea to get Ivermectin and give her the exact dose (under vet's supervision)? It seems like so much work though... Any ideas? I won't use Revolution and I will only buy if I need a prescription.

| Hmm that's crazy. Just out of curiosity why won't you use revolution? That's what I use and I just want to make sure there isn't something bad about it that i didn't know about.

It is also very new and unproven. Because it is put on the skin there is no guarantee that it will be absorbed. I also saw something on the net about a higher death rate with it but I can't prove it. I guess I will have to stick with Interceptor since the dose is small than Heartgard and all the other companies add other ingredients. This is crazy.

| I just called Novaris (Interceptor/Sentinel). They said do NOT cut it (because it could leave the pet open for infection but maybe they are just saying that) and those are the only dosages available. The SafeHeart dose which may be good for larger dogs isn't available in the US either. Maybe I should call Merial (Heartgard) now so I can get the same answer. Ellie doesn't get the chews. She gets the pills but I bet they will say not to cut them.

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | hard telling anymore Honestly I do not trust pharmecutical companies. Its all so scary! well let me know what you find out. Im afraid to switch of off sentinal being Diggy reacted to Revolution and i have NO CLUE what was in it that he reacted to but whatever it was isnt in Sentinel....I really wish there was a 100% safe all natural way of doing this.

| So I guess I have two choices. I can give her Interceptor which is almost twice what she should get for her weight and five times more potent than what is necessary or I can give plain Heartgard which is over four times what she should get for her weight. These poor animals. Their bodies suffer because of this kind of thing and it is not acceptable. I don't trust drug companies eiher...not one of them and not even a little bit. Maybe Ellie's vet will get a bottle of Ivermectin or Milbemycin Oxime and measure it out for me.

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | i wonder how its possible if the pill is twice the dose needed why cutting it would not be affective? i hate this...i guess i feel better not giving a whole one for some odd reason. I dont give heartworm year round either. I am in Michigan and I know the vet says to do it year round but why???? Mosquitos cannot live under 40 degrees and wll Detroit RARELY gets 40 in the winter and sometimes a month around or below zero....

Could someone call Merial and ask if it is okay to cut the regular Heartgard (not Plus)? I'm tired of talking to companies that don't seem to care...

id say i give sentinal 8 months of the year. Plus with all this overdosing we seem to be doing i wonder if its actually lasting just a month anyway. Hell for years they were telling us these vac's were only good for a year and now look its more like 3 years for some! I do the yearly heartworm test and hopefully we just say negative with it all!
