| hypoglicemia My little 2.5 pound 15 week old puppy has been having low blood sugar issues. He had one episode over the weekend. We just didn't realize he wasn't eating. And today when I got home he was acting funny again. i gave him the nutra cal and he's better now. My question is... does anyone know of a puppy food that might be better for him since he is having these problems. We feed him Eukanuba puppy food now. |

Edited to add: when you change him from Eukanuba to another food, it is normal for him to have diarrhea for a few days so watch to make sure he is drinking | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | How often is he eating? When Cali had it I had to feed her every 3-4 hours even during the night.I fed her wet and kept kibble down all the time. If he is home alone during the day it important that you know he is eating while you are gone or have someone come feed him. They can go down real fast with hypoglycemia. Cali grew out of it as most all do. I hope he feels better soon.

| Mine suffered from hypoglycemia until she was about 8 months. Find a good quality food that he will eat. Make sure you have food down all the time. I made sure I gave her some Nuti-Cal in the morning and then again before she went to bed just a finger tip full that way I was sure she wouldn't get a sudden drop. California Natural, New Balance, Natures Variety and Canidae are very good foods. When you are home make sure he eats several times a day even if you have to hand feed. I learned the expensive way. Good Luck!

| The most important thing is to make sure that he is eating. As everyone has said, I would make sure to leave a good quality dry food down at all times (I use Solid Gold). Monitor the food and make sure that he is eating it. If he isn't, try another food or try to get him to eat wet food. We too had a hypoglycemic puppy who had to be fed every 4 hours for about a month and a half. They will usually outgrow this, but it can take a lot of work and observation on your part to get him through this. I would also recommend keeping a bottle of the light Karo syrup on hand as it can get into the bloodstream quickly. Keep a close eye on his gums to make sure that they do not lose color as this is a sign of hypoglycemia. I would also notify your vet so that if he has a bad attack, they know of the problem and can assist if needed quickly.

| thank you for all the good advice. he is our second and the first one was just as small, completely crazy and ate very little food and she never had any problems. so I feel bad because I didn't watch him closely enough to make sure he was eating like he should. I will definitely find one of these other foods. I'm kinda of annoyed at my vet because she asked what I was feeding and said that was a good food and didn't offer any other suggestions. this morning I mixed wet a dry food and I sat and watched him eat. Then left dry food out for him. We see the vet on Monday and I'll be sure to tell her about this and make sure there isn't something else going on. |

| Hi, I just had my 6 month old Yorki-poo neutered and he had to fast for over 12 hrs!!!!!!!! He only weighs about 5 lbs. I gave coco dinner at 5pm and again at 9pm. He had his surgery at 11:00am! I was scared he was going to keel over before the surgery. When they did hid pre-surgery blood work they checked his glucose levels. They were still in normal range. He did not eat again until 3pm! Coco did very well. Cindy & coco |
